This was my first James Patterson read, another thrilling whodunit mystery. I just kept on turning the pages, eager to find out who the killer was. The story took an unexpected turn around Part Three. After reading a bit further, I figured out who the killer was before the killer was revealed. I absolutely hate it when that happens. I was disappointed until I got to the very end, when the story took yet another unexpected turn. That's what I look for when I read a mystery novel. I like to be kept guessing until the very end. I will definitely continue with the Women's Murder Club series, see what's next for these women.

The Women's Murder Club pits four San Francisco women professionals against a serial killer who's stalking and murdering newlyweds in bestselling author James Patterson's newest thriller. Lindsay Boxer is a homicide inspector who's just gotten some very bad news. She deals with it by immersing herself in her newest case and soliciting the personal as well as professional support of her closest friend, who happens to be the city's medical examiner. The two women, along with an ambitious and sympathetic reporter and an assistant DA, form an unlikely alliance, pooling their information and bypassing the chain of command in an engaging, suspenseful story whose gruesome setup is vintage Patterson.
"What is the worst thing anyone has ever done?" the killer muses to himself early in the narrative. "Am I capable of doing it? Do I have what it takes?" Answering his own question, he embarks on a murderous spree that takes him from the bridal suite in a Nob Hill hotel to a honeymoon destination in the Napa Valley and thence to a wedding reception at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Dispatching his victims on the happiest day of their lives, he purposefully leaves enough clues for his distaff trackers to discover his identity and put him behind bars. But just when the women think they've got the case all wrapped up, the killer turns the tables on them in a bloody denouement that even the most discerning reader won't see coming. Patterson, author of the popular Alex Cross mysteries, promises future adventures for the Women's Murder Club, which may give him an opportunity to develop his heroines' characters more completely and win new fans among those who prefer their detectives in high heels and lipstick.

I've seen Patterson's name on the best seller list for as long as I can remember and this was the first book of his that I have read, and perhaps I experienced a case of "higher than deserved expectations" or perhaps this is not the author's best work, but I thought the book was just ok.

On of the reviews on the back cover claim to make Patricia Cornwall books look like a fairy tale: I've had nightmares from reading Cornwall's books and in my opinion, they make "1st to Die" look like a fairytale in comparison.

Overall, it was entertaining enough, but not the page turner the reviews promised. The story was fairly predictable and the characters were ordinary and in sometimes quite boring. I don't think I'll be picking up the next book of the series...

Actually a very intriguing and emotionally connected story. I only read it because someone gave it to me, but I've become a fan of James Patterson because of it. It's the story of a 4 women who band together to find a killer of newlyweds. It speaks of female empowerment, but there is a very touching love story twined around it. It is a very fast read.

This was the first of the Women's Murder Club books that I read and immediately I was hooked. It is definitely a page turner. James Patterson does a great job of keeping the reader involved in the story. He makes you feel like you are really getting to know the characters while you also feel the adrenaline of the case that they are working on. This book they are trying to solve the case of a serial killer that is killing brides and grooms. You are kept on the edge of your seat right until the end.

This was my first Patterson book to read, and I enjoyed it. The book was written with 2-3 page chapters, and I found that to be a nice change of pace and made it very easy to find a stopping point at the end of the day. The story was consistent up until the last 1/4, with several unexpected turns near the end. The only thing I didn't like was the outcome of one of the characters, but you can't get everything you want. :) Overall very enjoyable, I will probably read the rest of the series

While I really enjoyed the plot from this book, I doubt I will finish the series. The relationships came across as forced and the dialogue didn't read as realistic either.. came across as a man writing how he THOUGHT a woman would act/speak/think/interact. The character development didn't ring true... It's an ok read.

Lindsay Boxer is a homicide detective working on a case involving the murder of newlyweds. Two bodies are found in the honeymoon suite the day after a wedding. Both the bride and groom were stabbed. One day later a pair of newlyweds disappear shortly after exchanging vows. A killer is targeting newly married couples, so a task force is created. Lindsay discusses the case with her friends over lunch. Claire is a medical examiner. Jill is an assistant district attorney. Cindy is a reporter who is new to the crime beat. All of the ladies are interested in solving this case and believe that their expertise will help do so.

This is the first book in the Women's Murder Club series. I didn't care for Lindsay. She was the tough cop who had to prove herself in a job full of men. She was very brusque. I didn't like her style at all. Of course, she also had a serious medical problem to deal with, and a new partner for this case.

I like the idea of the women banning together to solve some cases; but I didn't care for the execution. Lindsay latched onto a suspect and wouldn't let go. She was looking for clues that would prove that she had the right guy. That is a good way to arrest the wrong guy. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Suzanne Toren. She did a good job with the character voices, but the whole reading was very melodramatic. Maybe I would have enjoyed reading the book more. My rating: 3.5 Stars.

I liked the book -- enough to continue reading the whole series. But it was obvious that Patterson was not thinking like a real homocide detective with some of the plot turns. Especially near the end, some of the things Lindsay does are simply not realistic. Good suspense, good story, but not at all realistic. I think the series got a lot better after he got a co-writer working with him.

The killer wonders "What is the worst thing anyone has ever done?", as he sets out to do worse.

San Francisco homicide investigator, Lindsay Boxer, is called to the most disturbing crime scene, a young couple has been murdered on their wedding night, the bride still in her wedding gown. This horrifying scene lays heavy in Lindsay's mind.

As the investigation begins, another murder is committed, again another young couple on their wedding night.

1st To Die" is the first novel in a brand new series, and what a great novel it is. The plot races along, combining the murders, devistating health issues for Lindsay, and some romance, twisting and turning all the way to the shocking the conclusion.

From the flyleaf:

Four women - four friends - share a determination to stop a killer who has been stalking newlyweds in San Francisco. Each one holds a piece of the puzzle: Lindsay Boxer is a homicide inspector in the San Francisco Police Department, Claire Washburn is a medical examiner, Jill Bernhardt is an assistant D.A., and Cindy Thomas just started working the crime desk of the San Francisco Chronicle.

But the usual procedures aren't bringing them any closer to stopping the killings. So these women form a Women's Murder Club to collaborate outside the box and pursue the case by sidestepping their bosses and giving one another a hand.

The four women develop intense bonds as they pursue a murderer whose crimes have stunned an entire city. Working together, they track down the most terrifying and unexpected killer they have ever encountered - before a shocking conclusion in which everything they know turns out to be devastatingly wrong. Full of breathtaking drama and unforgettable emotions for which James Patterson is famous, 1st to Die is the start of a blazingly fast-paced and sensationally entertaining new series of crime thrillers.

Cover blurb - 1st to Die is a dazzlingly powerful new thriller by master suspense novelist James Patterson, the #1 bestselling author of Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. I enjoyed the Main character Lindsay Boxer - a police detective. The emphasis on her female friends was also nice. However, the book was too explicit in both violence and sex for my tastes.

1st to Die is the first James Patterson novel I've read. I had been dragging my feet for the last few years, never venturing beyond the first few paragraphs of any of his books but I finally made myself give him a chance. I'm not really sure why this guy is a bestselling novelist, his writing style is atrocious and his characters are insipid. I'll give him this; he's a marketing genius, short chapters (in some case less than 2 pages each) and simplicity. It's a shame, really, because the story itself had a lot of promise and to say I didn't enjoy it at all would be a lie. However, I couldn't get past the fact that I felt like Patterson wrote an outline first and then went through and wrote a few sentences per heading topic.
I really wanted to like the four women who make up the Women's Murder Club but the writing was so flat and the dialog was at times painful. Let's start with the fact that they would have chosen a way cooler title for their club. âWomen's Murder Clubâ, how uncreative can you get?
A homicide detective, medical examiner, newspaper reporter and an assistant district attorney working together and therefore, jeopardizing their careers. The friendship between the ladies was not realistic; they didn't know each other long enough to form such a close bond. And the bond that ties them all together is that they are professional women who are struggling to make it in male dominated careers. But the whole I am Woman, hear me roar thing just doesn't work here.
The concept of the serial killer was the coolest part of the book, killing off newly married Brides and Grooms. But the final twist was straight up blah.
