Festivals of the World: Canada

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 5-9 - This new edition of a title published in 1994 offers a comprehensive overview of life in the world's second largest country. Pang gives ample attention to all of the elements (historical, geographical, contemporary, and cultural) that combine to define Canada's national identity. The author explains why it is such a desirable place to live (e.g., geographic beauty, social programs) while objectively addressing some of the less positive features, such as the division between French and English Canada as well as the historical and contemporary difficulties of the Native peoples. There is excellent coverage of Canadian arts but no mention of the sport of curling (where Canada is traditionally dominant on the world scale) in the chapter on leisure. Curious, too, is the fact that all of the political leaders listed are members of the Liberal Party. Full-color photos appear throughout, and the maps are current and easy to read. A time line compares developments in Canada to events taking place in the rest of the world. This worthwhile addition stands equally well with Kristi Desaulniers's Canada (Chelsea, 2003) and Eric Braun's Canada in Pictures (Lerner, 2003). - Robyn Walker, Elgin Court Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada

Welcome to my Country: Cambodia

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-Topics such as language, the arts, food, and leisure activities are covered in simple language, accompanied by bright, colorful photographs. A brief discussion of major historical events is also offered. Each volume begins by describing the land and geography (including bordering countries). . . .A map is presented at the end of the book. The narratives seem designed to cover the kinds of research topics children are commonly asked to explore, including the industry, products, religion, etc. The discussion of the history and current political and economic climate of each country is frank, and Cambodia mentions some of the problems left in the wake of the Khmer Rouge regime, yet the overall tone is sympathetic to the people and their culture. Particularly with Thailand, readers would be hard-pressed to find mention of any difficulties-poverty, pollution, and the like. This impression is fortified by the photographs, which depict happy, smiling people. Neither the books nor videos cited in the list for further reading include a publication date, and most of the Web sites offered are for much older visitors. Both books appear to be adaptations of titles in the "Countries of the World" series (Gareth Stevens) for older children. Consider adding either one if the needs of your audience demand.
