For those of you who don't go to CMT  there are two new forums one for e-readers and one for contests and give always.  I believe that I was in violation of PBS new rules when talking about my win on Daphne's blog, as PBS has new rules about promoting members blogs.

So for those of you who are unaware of this, and that just off the top of my head I can think of 5 in our group that have blogs. (If I am missing any one I apologize.) Here are the new rules.

This is the only place on PBS where you can post about giveaways*, or "vote for my nephew to win this contest" or "visit my blog/website" etc.

Anyone submitting those types of posts anywhere else on PBS (including in PMs or forum sigs or profiles) will first get a warning, and repeat offenders may have their accounts terminated and be expelled from the club.

We think that some of our members might enjoy browsing giveaways, etc., but in general those posts seem like spam and interrupt discussions, so they will not be permitted in any other Discussion Forum (or anywhere else) here at PaperBackSwap.

*this term refers to giveaways OUTSIDE of the PaperBackSwap site; it does NOT include Book Bazaar-type deals/freebies.

So, here are the rules:

  • Do not post your blog giveaway or "visit my site" or "vote for..." message anywhere but in this forum
  • No one may start more than one topic here per day
  • You may not "bump" a topic more than once per day (bump = posting in the topic to bring it back to the top of the forum topics list)
  • You may not start a thread solely for advertising your business. This forum is only to announce contests and giveaways.
  • Any site to which you link in your topic here may NOT require any purchase, or the provision of any financial information, as part of the promotion

Again, anyone who in our sole judgment breaks the above rules will get a warning -  repeat or egregious offenders may have their accounts terminated and be expelled from the club.

So I have a question or two.  I can't PM say lets say Bonnie and say check out so and so's blog.  If EC, SKP. or BC has something of interest to the members here, I can't bring that up or supply a link?  I am not certain I love these new rules, as it seems that they may interfere with the exchange of information,

That being said I am so glad that they have set up a forum for e-readers.  As I am tech challenged I am always wondering how to do something on my Nook,  I also appreciate the deals and freebie lists.

I saw those new rules, too, Letty---seems a bit much that you can't promote in a PM or signature--not sure how those 'interrupt' the flow and honestly, we here in HF WANT to know about the HF-related ones--I guess you could post here that you've posted there, right?

I HOPE to be a frequenter of the e-reader thread soon---i've been wishing for an ipad, mostly to use as a e-reader but also for email and on-the-go posting here, so we'll see.....

I know!  Lets make up secret code words for our blogs!  Even better lets make the code words Barry Manilow songs!  Letty, then instead of saying Daphne's  blog you can say you got a necklace from the Copacabana or instead of my blog you can say "Mandy" gave you a book.

And that  my friends is why they call me a diabolical genius (actually I make people call me that but why quibble?).

Seriously, I agree with Colleen.  I don't see how it interrupts things here because we're genre specific and there is probably going to be alot of "PSST... Look over in the giveways area" threads going on here now :)

Let me get this right, I have just posted links to two of my reviews on The Shelf of Shame under the Alan Savage thread here in this forum. Does that mean I need to edit them out?  Or should I just post the links to the same reviews (but without all the delightfully groaning quotes) on Amazon and that is OK since I'm not promoting my blog?

This does seem silly, what's wrong with a signature line with a link to one's blog? It's one thing to spam about one's blog just like some authors do in the Amazon forums but I've never seen that happening here.

And what is with the you can only start one topic a day rule about?

I think this was mainly done to keep promotion out of CMT. It sounds like there has been too much blog promoting and those threads where we are asked to go vote for something in CMT lately. Anything that is H/F specific should stay here, just like usual, I think.

In order to get a handslap, you'd have to have someone rat on you and I don't see that happening to anyone posting here in this forum, espeically about a topic of interest to historical fiction readers.

Letty, your post about the necklace would be fine because you weren't posting just to promote a blog, you were sharing your win with us. That is different than asking someone to sign up for something on a blog or asking someone to vote for something.

I say we carry on as usual unless we are told to stop. We already have a giveaway thread and I'm sure TPTB would agree it makes sense for us to use it instead of posting in a forum none of us would ever even visit. This is the H/F forum, so it makes sense that H/F blogs should be discussed here. I only look at 2 places regularly here at PBS; this forum and the ARC thread in the Book Bazaar. Sometimes, I read CMT when I'm bored-browsing. I'd never even see information about H/F blogs if it couldn't be posted here and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would miss it.

I really think we are fine, just as we are. I'll even volunteer to take the handslap; I can add it to my collection. So, just say, "Valli made me do it!"  :-D

Cathy, don't edit your review links. You are not promoting a blog, asking someone to sign up or vote for something; you are just sharing a review. That's totally different.

The rules for links to blogs or websites in your sig have always been that you can have the link, but there can't be any information with it. So, you can have a link with the name of your blog, but you can't add something like, "Come sign up for my blog" with the link next to it.

After reading the rule:

This is the only place on PBS where you can post about giveaways*, or "vote for my nephew to win this contest" or "visit my blog/website" etc.

Anyone submitting those types of posts anywhere else on PBS (including in PMs or forum sigs or profiles) will first get a warning, and repeat offenders may have their accounts terminated and be expelled from the club.

I'd still say that the regular links in your sig or profile are fine....as long as they aren't accompanied by a plea to visit, or sign up or vote for something. It doesn't sound like they have entirely changed the rules regarding sig links, they are just trying to control promotions. That's the way I take it anyway...If anyone is really concerned, you can always ask them. I really think we are fine though.

Someone did seek a clarification on the rule about putting blog links in your signature and TPTB said that was fine as long as it is just a regular-sized font link.

And Cathy, the one topic a day thing applies just to posts in the Contests and Giveaways forum.

First off Holly BAwhahahaha....  I was thinking code words too.  I like the Manilow angle.   Cathy which song do you want to be?   I don't know if they are going to be to strict as it is so new.  Maybe we should just say,   WWBD (what would Barry do)  when we see that we know to check out the blog!  LOL

Edit.. .

Thanks for the clarification everyone. Geez, I can't believe blog promotion could be so bad in other places on this site that rules like this are necessary. But then I've never quite understood the importance of having a bajillion people reading one's blog.
