Yippee!  TPTB have graciously given us permission to organize our own little HF Holiday Fun/Secret Santa exchange.

Here's how it works:

1) Send me a PM telling me that you're in and, most importantly, giving me your address. Sign-ups start now and will continue through November 9th -- which should be plenty of time for all, even the lollygaggers.

2) Make a "most wanted" list to post in the separate "Most Wanted Lists" thread that I am starting. On this list should be the WL books that you most want AND that are unlikely to be posted to you within the next two months.  You should list between 5 and 15 books to give your Secret Santa a range of choices. You can provide links to each listed book's page, ISBNs, a link to your WL, or the titles and desired bindings. This is also where new members can introduce themselves, if you haven't done so yet, and where you can tell us how you celebrate the holidays.

3) I will randomly assign you a secret buddy and send you her or his name and address after sign-ups are completed. Look on your buddy's "most wanted" list to find a book (or 2 or 3) to send. Wrap it (them) up and send off the package in time to arrive for Christmas/Kwanzaa/Winter Solstice* -- a good deadline for Media Mail is December 5th; for First Class, Parcel, or Priority, December 10th.  Media Mail will invariably be the least expensive option.

Rules/tips (mostly plagiarized from Valli's old post):

  • There is a money limit of between 10 and 15 dollars, not including shipping. You can buy more than one book.
  • The books can be used or new, but MUST meet PBS posting guidelines.
  • If you have a problem that will prevent you from being able to send a package to your buddy, please let me know as soon as possible. We all understand that sometimes life gets in the way of our best intentions, and I have a back-up plan in case this happens.  No one will be left without a gift.
  • Remember that not everyone celebrates Christmas, or does so in a religious manner, so don't use that Nativity wrapping paper unless you know that your buddy will appreciate it. (Though, honestly, if someone is sending me a present, I don't care whether it's wrapped in religious paper, secular paper, newsprint, or a paper bag -- but to each, his/her own.)
  • PM me when you've mailed your package.
  • Include a little note or card in your package to let your buddy know who you are.
  • If you want to add a little something extra to the package, send a bookmark.  Anything else will make the package ineligible for Media Mail.
  • Even though you are not receiving PBS credits, you may still use PBS Delivery Confirmation with or without PBS printed postage IF you want. See the posting below for how to do this. I recommend Delivery Confirmation (whether through PBS, the Post Office, or PayPal) so that you can track your package. This is the holiday season, after all. Again, please send in a timely fashion so that your package will arrive before the holidays!!!
  • When you receive your package, post about it, brag about your goodies, and thank your secret Santa.

Please note: Because we are not depositing PBS credits, PBS is allowing us to have this exchange in the HF forum rather than in the Games forum AND only during the holiday season. This is considered an UNMODERATED game -- which means there is no recourse through PBS if one's secret buddy doesn't follow through, books don't meet posting requirements, the package gets lost, blah, blah, blah. In other words, if you participate in this Secret Holiday Exchange Extravaganza, you are doing so at your own risk. Of course, we all know that the only risks we face as HF Forum members is that our TBR stacks will topple and that our WLs will strain against the maxima (as we read what others want/receive) -- and that we will have so much fun, other PBS members will invade our turf (not that we aren't a friendly, genial bunch -- we welcome all...except swappers gone rogue).

Let the fun begin!!!

*For those who celebrate Chanukah, well...given that Chanukah starts Dec. 1st this year, you may just have to extend the celebration past its usual 8 nights -- but really, you're gonna complain if you receive a late present???  I don't think so! Anyway, by Jewish Standard Time, the package will be early no matter when it arrives.

If you'd like to send your secret Santa package using PBS Delivery Confirmation (DC), there are two ways to do so. In both cases, you need money in your PBS account. The first method allows you to purchase PBS DC only; the second method allows you to purchase PBS DC with printed postage.

1) Custom Delivery Confirmation Label: Go to "My Account" and click on "Custom DC." Click on "Create a New Label." Fill in the name and address of your secret buddy and print the DC label. This will cost you 46˘ -- 27˘ is the PBS fee which is deducted immediately and the 19˘ USPS fee will be collected at the post office. These fees are in addition to the cost of postage.

2) Mail To A Friend Option: Go to the book's page on PBS -- which you can access by searching for the book or by clicking on the book's title on a WL or RL. On the right side of the page, click on "Mail to a Friend" under "More Options." Fill in the name and address of your secret buddy. Then you can print the wrapper as usual -- adding PBS DC only, PBS DC with printed postage, or no extra services. IMPORTANT: If you are using PBS postage, check the weight. Sometimes the weights are wrong. AND, if you are sending more than the one book, you will need to change the weight to reflect the additional book(s). The cost of using PBS DC with printed postage is 62˘ (43˘ to PBS and 19˘ to USPS). If you use printed postage, you can just drop the package in any blue box.  Also, when you use this option, the book goes onto your account and you will need to mark the book received after  your buddy lets you know that it was delivered.

I believe the fear of the wet noodle is more than adequate to keep us all in line!

I am still on-track to post the 2011 HF Challenge info first thing tomorrow morning, so you will be able to plan your strategy there, expand your WL with books you absolutely must have to fulfill the challenge, and add them to your Secret Santa list.

Deb, do the books on our Secret Santa list have to be on our actual PBS WL?  My WL is full of things that I know I'll wait a long time for and there are other things that are more readily accessible but are really more wanted than what's on my WL.  Plus over half of my WL is on hold.

Nope -- you can put any titles from any genre your heart desires on your Holiday Fun Most Wanted list. However, if what you yearn for are out-of-print, hard-to-get books, include some titles that might be easier for your Secret Santa to find.

I know that you're all caught up in the 2011 HF Challenges, so I'm bumping this up to make sure you also sign up for the HF Holiday Fun Extravaganza. As Christa indicated above, you can strategically include books on your "most wanted" list to use for your challenges.  BUT, the most important step in becoming a Secret Santa is PMing me your address. If your name is not on the list of "players" above and you want to be included (and why wouldn't you?), send me your addy.

Bumping this up again so it doesn't get lost in the chatter.  I don't want anyone to get left out!

AHEM, Valli -- As indicated in the carefully- and deliberately-written first post above and highlighted in the first step, sign-ups go through November 9. cheeky Just PM me your address and you're signed up!! In terms of posting your most-wanted books, you probably want to do so by the time I assign secret buddies which should be Nov. 10th or 11th.

Valli - November 9th is the last day to sign up & get Deb-a-Doo our addresses. (Speaking of our wonderful, beautiful, gracious, & talented hostess, you should all know - Deb is all bluff. I've met her. No need to fear her or her wet noodle !)

RE: our most wanted list(s): a true story for you:

When Christa posted the awesome 2011 HF Challenges, Mom (aka Linda) cautioned me that we need to pull as much from our TBR shelves as possible ... (she is a chronic credit worrier & is dismayed at all the green & red "W's" on our PBS TBR list). I told her I certainly agreed (I am nothing if not a dutiful daughter).

Then, during a subsequent conversation, Linda told me she had been thinking about some of the different categories and how to fill them. She suggested Alexander the Great for the 0 - 500 BC category, had another couple of titles for the pre 500 BC category, had some other ideas about other categories ... you get the picture. I said, "Mom, do we have any of these books already in our possession?"

"Well, no," she admitted. But I think some of them may be available & I bet I could get some of them for a penny plus shipping at Amazon ... "

And, I said, "Put some of them on our Secret Santa list - maybe one of them will show up."

Sometimes it's all about the "collecting" of books, as well as the "reading."

Kelly

OK -- I'm heading out for the weekend and will be offline. But I'm hoping when I come back, I'll find more PMs from folks who want to join on our holiday fun. The list of Secret Santas is updated through this morning. If your name is not on the list and you want it to be, PLEASE send me your address.

A few things:

1) I edited the first post to include a new rule: "PM me when you've mailed your package." This will just help me keep track of what's going on (and wield the wet noodle, if necessary).

2) If you're not on my list of friends, I will send you a friend request -- because I can always use new friends.

3) PLEASE post your "most wanted" titles in the "Holiday Fun -- Most Wanted List" thread if you haven't done so yet. You should post by Friday, November 12. This will give Secret Santas plenty of time to shop at  Amazon, BCO, Book Depository, eBay, FOL sales, or their favorite UBS.

4) I know that you're all very, very excited about this holiday extravaganza. However, don't send your packages TOO early -- i.e., they should arrive sometime in December (not before). On the other hand, don't send your packages too late -- i.e., they should arrive by the holidays.

5) Any questions or problems, please PM me. Any complaints, please PM someone else.

Have fun!!!

Wow -- we're rolling! Keep sending me those PMs telling me that "of course, I'm playing Secret Santa -- wouldn't dream of not doing so (too afraid of the wet noodle)" -- don't forget to include your address.

Extending the sign-up deadline to Wednesday because...well, just because.  Make sure you post your most wanted list in the aptly-titled "Holiday Fun -- Most Wanted Lists" thread.

Ooohh -- this is gonna be so much fun!!!

No, silly Christa.  People still have one more day to sign up.  Deb extended the deadline. Apparently she wants to put us under pressure and take away a shopping day from us.  Geesh!  crying (JK, Deb, extend away!!)

OKAY -- LAST CALL FOR ALL YOU LOLLYGAGGERS -- TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HF HOLIDAY FUN/SECRET SANTA EXTRAVAGANZA, I NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU BY MIDNIGHT TOMORROW!!!

Newbies are certainly welcome -- as are our grizzled lovely veterans.  Read the first post to see how it works and then send me a PM with your address. I will put your names in a super-duper randomizer and get you the names of your secret buddies on Friday -- so you can start shopping this weekend!

Oh -- don't forget to post a list of your most wanted titles in the Holiday Fun - Most Wanted Lists thread.  For those of you participating in the 2011 HF Challenges, this is a good opportunity to fill in a gap or two.

Don't miss out on the fun!

Bumping one last time -- it's just about midnight my time and I'm heading to bed -- but since it's not midnight in all time zones, you can still PM me with your address if you want in on our Holiday Fun/Secret Santa exchange. It turns out that tomorrow's going to be a crazy day for me so you likely won't get your secret buddy until tomorrow night (so you can even PM me tomorrow morning/afternoon). And I figured out how to enter the formula for randomizing all your names in my spreadsheet -- very cool! Ooh, the excitement continues to build....

Again, just a reminder:

* There is a money limit of between $10 and $15 (not including shipping).

* Books can be used or new but must be postable by PBS standards.

* There are no PBS credits involved.

* Mail your package to arrive in early/mid-December.

Any problems, questions, issues, let me know.

Aaahhhh -- the thrills, the fun, the excitement. Enjoy!!
