A couple of questions--this is my first PBS challenge so some of these may be obvious.  wink

Is the plan to start this challenge in January or can we count books we read in 2010?

For books that could count in more than one place (for instance a memoir of a scientist or religious icon)--should we just pick one?

This is my first "challenge" on here also so I'm sure I will be asking a lot of questions too!  I was also wondering if we could start before 2011.....   I'm sure I could easily start this within the next few weeks!

Well, it's supposed to be a 2011 challenge, so technically you should wait until January 1st, but--this is being done for fun, and to make us read more nonfiction.  So, no one will yell at you if you start reading now!devil

I'm kind of a stickler for details so I will wait until January 1st exactly to start reading in all my challenges.

Since I hate to squash enthusiasm to read, here are a couple of possibilities.  Last year one of the genre challenges (possibly Sci-Fi?) ran their challenge from 12/1/09 to 12/1/10, I presume because they wanted to get started.  This year, in the Historical Fiction challenge, one book is allowed to be started early, as long as it's finished in 2011.  We could "technically" allow one book to be started early.

I actually have books to finish for the FOUR 2010 challenges I'm in, and since I AM a stickler, I'm determined to finish them all!  So I personally wouldn't be starting early on the 2011 even if it was part of the official challenge.

The challenges are fun, especially choosing the books you're going to read, so I always want to start choosing early.  But then, the problem to starting early is that there's a long time to wait until January 1st!

Shanan, yes, if a book counts in more than one category you should pick one.

Sounds like a plan.  I am right in the middle of a few so I will probably get them finished.  But I will start planning my reading for end of December begininng of January to include more non-fiction.

I am very excited to get started too!!

This is my first challenge too and I have yet another question.

Can we read two different books in one category?

For example, the Geography/History category?  I can think of many different books that fit into that category.

LOL, I'll try to keep my questions at a minimum!

Jo, typcially you can read as many books in a single category as you want - but only one counts for the challenge.  Filling in the other categories makes the challenge more difficult to complete - hence the name!

Jo--if you want to read both a Geography and a History you can read one of them as the Readers Choice category.  That only works once though!

I've only chosen one book so far (haven't added it to my list yet) and the more that I look at it sitting here on my desk the more I want to start it right now!  I'll resist...

I actually made my own "challenge" even before this idea was started & that was that I wanted to read a total of 150 books between Nov. 1, 2010- Dec. 31, 2011.  I forced myself to start book #1 on Nov. 1 just so I wouldn't cheat.

And now that I have this "challenge" to help me out, it will give me a handful of my 150 to read. cheeky

I really want to wait until Jan. 1 just to be fair to myself & prove that I can do this within a year, along with my own challenge of 150 books within 14 months.

LOL Diane, I know that feeling of having books & wanting to start them.  I did that with the "challenge" I just mentioned in my last post above.  I kept wanting to start my book before Nov. 1.  It took a LOT of strength to keep from doing it.

OK so I am starting to understand now. We don't have to list specific books, just categories. I think I can actually live with that!

Yeah, I think we will be listing our actual books as we find them. smiley

As far as listing your books, you can do that any way you want.  You can search for them all right now and list them, you can wait til closer to January 1st, or you can list them any time across the year as you find and read them.  I like to search for the books I'm going to read between now and January 1st and have them all listed by then--but you don't have to do that, especially if you're having trouble finding something you like in a particular category--you have the whole year to find the perfect book.  You also can change your mind at any time.  I usually pick a few books that I end up changing my mind on, if I start reading something I really don't like I don't finish it.  Then I just change the title in my list and read something good instead.

I happen to have a LOT of books at home, so will probably choose most of them from my TBR pile.  But who knows what treasures I'll find at the thrift store?  So I will likely change some of my titles after I list them.

Thanks to everyone who is helping the newbies (me in particular) understand the logistics of a challenge before get started.  laugh

I will probably start listing some books as I pick them so I know what categories I need to look in.  I don't look in the non-fiction sections on as regular of a basis so I will need to keep it organized and on my mind.  :)

Which reminds me I need to go put the book I got yesterday through PBS down.

I really want to read the "biography" one right away because I got a book that I want to give away for Christmas but I want to read it first, haha. Has anyone ever done that?  I found it about 2 months ago at a yard sale but it looks NEW-- got it for a dollar but had the original price tag still on it (which was quite a bit more!). It would make a great gift but I want to read it before I give it away.  But if I read it now, it's not really fair to use for a challenge meant to be started in January.

Maybe I will read it this year but read another biography in 2011. I'm sure there are plenty of those that would interest me.  cheeky

Shanan, I will probably do that! laugh

It is about Patrick Swayze.  My mom just adored him so when I saw the book for a dollar, I grabbed it.  I must say he died way too young. frown

Yes I was very sad when he passed.  He seemed like a nice guy.

I think I want to read some of Barbara's books.  I just saw them on the lists thread and they look like loads of fun.  :)

Yes, those do look interesting, Shanan!

I just realized the other day that this challenge gives me a chance to read something about the Holocaust. It's about the only part of history that won't put me to sleep so I think I am going to find a book about that & also read The Diary of Anne Frank.  I think I am going to like this challenge after all!

I have been thinking about all the things I want to learn about--and this challenge is giving me a great reason to start learning about them.

I know I have read some great accounts of the Holocaust--that is an interesting time in history to read about.  I could see books about that falling into a lot of the categories.

I think I am going to use one of the Pooh and Philosophy books as my philosophy book too--I just need to pick one.  :)
