Warning....the update they released today has made me hopping mad. So if you don't want to get upset, don't upgrade your PW 2013. Keep your wifi off until you read about the mess you will have on your Kindle. It is atrocious!

Can you give more detail? I am thinking of getting DS1 a Paperwhite for Christmas. Don't want to if it's going to be a nightmare.

There's some discussion as people test it out HERE.

I only have a PW1, and the update so far seems to be for the new Paperwhite.

Looks like dealing with Collections in the Cloud is a huge problem. And if you share an account with another person you can't help but see their collections as well if you sync, even if you don't want to see them.

I always keep my paperwhite wifi off, just because you never know if an upgrade in firmware will suck or not.

If you don't use collections, then the update is no problem. If you have never had any other Kindle before, then the update is no problem.

If, however, you have had kindles and used collections, there is the problem. For example, I have had 2 kindle keyboards, a kindle touch, and a PW1. All of the had collections. Different ones. Collections were deleted. Collections were renamed. Hundreds of combinations.

I no longer have any of those devices. The PW2 I have now had about 6 collections on it, and none of them had the same collection names as on any of my previous devices.

So a few minutes after the update was finished, I was like, where are my collections? I had none. I don't know what would have happened had I waited a little longer. But what I did was create 1 collection. That was about the time that ALL of the hundreds of previous collections, from previously owned devices, appeared on my PW2. Page after page after page. Collections that were deleted in 2010 from a device that was sold long ago, now on my PW2.

Now that is bad enough. But what compounds things is, every time you go to delete one, a message pops up. First, about it being synced, second about not being connected (if wifi is off)

Every time you want to create a collection, a message pops up. "turn on wifi?" "collection not synced"

Every time you want to add an item to a collection, a message pops up. "Content Not Synced." - and I will get this EVERY time because I side load ALL of my books.

OMG...just now while testing this for you.....I created a collection and added some books. and noticed 536 PAGES of items on my device...HUH??? I have less than 20. And there is no way to separate cloud from on device on that adding page.

This update is a POS.

But if it is a new account, with no previous devices, then it will be fine.

Yes, for him it will be just fine.

I am hoping a jailbreak and root package will be ready soon, I am ready to modify it.

Good to know. Hubby is eyeing the PW at the moment, and if he gets one it will be on HIS account. Not mine, I've 2 collections set up on mine and I don't want anything he has on it.

Yeah, that makes me think I should put mine on another account. I have 2 accounts. Maybe I will do that!

Ok, put it on an account that never had a kindle device on it, and no "ghost collections." Still 26 pages of archived books to ignore when adding books to collections. And still get the pop up about the book not syncing to other collections (because it is side loaded).

Was able to check out goodreads, it's just like the android app, mostly, so not really something I need, since I have a tablet.

I'm delerious with delight, I have now jailbroken my PW2, added personal screen savers (I have no ads) and just waiting for the geniuses to crack this cloud collections pop up messages crap with a patch. And the margins patch. I swear this is the last Kindle I will ever buy, though, unless they come out with a paperwhite mini.

I don't even know what collections are or how to use them...every so often I browse through my kindle and it's like Christmas...so glad amazon says if you already have the ebook!

I'm done. I can't deal with the PW2 since the update. I am listing it on ebay tomorrow. I reset to factory, which removed the jailbreak, took my pictures, and pysching myself up. I wish I'd just kept the PW1. But truthfully, the Kobo Glo is a better device.

Well, Amazon may not be producing devices to my taste, but they are the greatest company in the world! They are taking my PW2 back and issuing a full refund. (I did ask if they could roll back the firmware, and they said no).

I feel a bit of relief not having a Kindle reader. And shake my head at myself, at all the hacking and tweaking I had to do to the PW1 to get it to work how I wanted it to work. Yes it was fun, BUT, why go through all that, when my Kobo Glo is perfect without hacking?

Then I was worrying over being forced to read the Kindle owner's free book of the month on my son's kindle fire....so I deleted my "lending library wishlist." Most of the lendable books suck anyway! And I hate reading in the kindle tablet app. that thing sucks. Then I went and deleted the kindle app from all but one of our tablets. Waste of memory! Moon+ Reader Pro is WAY better than the kindle app.

Amazon has an amazing book store, and I am thankful for that. Their programmers need replacing, though. The manage your kindle "page" is horrible. The tablet apps are horrible (though I hear the kindle app for ios is better). The update they are still pushing to the Paperwhite 2 is horrible. And not just to me.

So anyway, rant over, love Amazon, don't love their devices too much any more.

So NOW they tell me, in an email, after receiving the device, that they are taking out a restocking fee. That burns me, they should have said that before I sent it.
