Since I'm bored at work, and I've given up on completeing this years challenge, I was filling in books for the 2019 challenge. Does anyone have any recommendations for the 1950s America slot? |

Here is one that would fit Carolyn The Hellfire Club by Jake Tapper |

Well, I've started out this year's challenge with The Standing Stones, #1 Hello, Jamie- Read a book featuring your favorite hunk. My choice for this category is War of the Wolf by Bernard Cornwell, featuring one of my all time favorite action heroes, Uhtred of Bebbanburg. This is the 11th novel in the author's Saxon Chronicles and is one of the best of the bunch IMHO. Uhtred is getting old, but he is still surrounded by family and some long time trusted companions. I gave it a 5 stars rating. |

Cheryl, I'm a bit behind on my beloved Uhtred series. At some point my interest started to wane a bit. I'm not sure why. However, I do have the two or three most recent books on Audible, so I will get to them at some point. I've probably missed oodles of discussion here in the years I've been flaking in and out only occasionally, but what does everyone think of the Netflix series? I like it! Particularly the most recent season. I often see deviations from the books (as I recall them - i.e. I don't recall Aethelwold being that bad), and the actor cast as Uhtred had to grow on me (becuase I always picture Viggo Mortenson as Uhtred), but it's entertaining. It makes me want to go back and read the books from the start. But I won't. I have too many other things to read. LOL!

Shelley I like the Netflix series although I am only a couple of episodes into season 2. My son tells me how their swords and shields are all wrong. I tell him he doesn't have to watch it if he doesn't like it. |

I like the actor that plays Uhtred very much too, although when I first started reading the books I also always pictured Viggo as Uhtred! I think the Netflix series does a very excellent job of portraying the grittiness of the time and the light that Alfred brought to Wessex even though he was a very imperfect man. My husband and I just finished up the last episode of the new season and I sure hope there are more to come. The books have been rather uneven in quality but the most recent one, War of the Wolf was just about perfect in my opinion. |

The Standing Stones #3- The Redcoats are Coming! For this category I selected The Traitor's Wife by Allison Pataki. This was a fictionalized account of the wife of Benedict Arnold, Margaret (Peggy) Shippen as seen through the eyes of her maid, Clara. If even some of the happenings that took place in this book are factually true, what an ambitious, deceitful piece of work Peggy was! We all remember learning in our American history class about how General Benedict Arnold betrayed the United States to the British and attempted to hand over West Point and murder George Washington. It seems however, that the real mover and shaker in this plot was Peggy Arnold. I really didn't like her at all, but the book was very interesting.
