I am returning to teach 2nd grade after 20 years teaching 6th-12th graders.  I am looking for suggestions for building a classroom library.  Thanks.

Ask PTA  of school Petty Cash fund for a $25 donation. (or 1 dollar for each student in your class)

Give each child 1 dollar and ask that child and parent go to the neighbourhood garage sale to buy books.

Child brings books to class

Check out the Book Bazaar forum.  Often members will run deals offering anywhere from a 2 for 1 to a 6 for 1 for children's books.  Other than that, thrift stores and garage sales are a good bet for finding cheap books for your classroom.  The majority of books I have were collected that way.  I currently teach 3rd and 6th grade special ed, so my library runs from pre-primer to 8th grade level.

Junie B. Jones, Magic Tree House, Magic School Bus, Berenstain Bears, and Amelia Bedelia are some that I can think of off the top of my head that my second graders like.  At this age, some are still wanting picture books, and some are starting to read early chapter books, so try to have both if possible.  I have found many good buys at garage sales.
