I think NOT!  3 books were due to be mailed (2 different times) ...were packaged and ready to go...went to print the label and PBS postage...

Then lo and behold my computer went "belly up" and the mail dates went past before I could resolve problem.

I have to thank my game-playing-grandson for this computer killing virus!!

Does failure to mail an accepted book go on your record as a "negative"  or a "neutral"?

Can you go to the library and use their computer to email the requesters?  You could also get the addresses that way to handwrite the address labels.

but can you not go to the library or another computer and PM them and tell them what happened?

if you do that, you can find out if they have requested another book from someone else and if not, you could tell them you are going to send the books soon and for once you might have to mail it without DC or using PBS postage.  I have NEVER used it and have had no problems with people getting the books.  Of course I use the APC maching at my PO and don't wait in line.

They don't have to request the book from someone else--it automatically goes to the next member in the FIFO line and ther are many copies in the database,
I can not drive at this time due to total knee replacement--so if I have PBS postage I can just pop it in my rural mailbox.

[The library is 30 miles round trip from me even if I could drive...sigh]

So ...  If you have computer access to post here, why can't you mailing labels with postage?

I don't think it leaves a negative against you or anything, but if PBS becomes aware that it happens often they might suspend you or send you a warning. I don't see anywhere in the help center about it though.  I've been having a few computer problems myself, can you send your grandson my way? Just joking! Hope it's all fixed for good.

Sheila,

There is no 3 strikes rule, but we are led to believe that they are keeping track of unfulfilled deals. I would guess that promising to send but never actually sending is somewhat more negative than not responding to requests at all, but not as negative as hitting "mailed" but never actually mailing. Thought the former is hard to prove, since it just gets considered 'lost."

If I were you, with the special circumstance you described, I'd send a note to the PBS Team to explain what happened to you and why you didn't send those three books, and I'd think that would probably help in the long run, if this becomes an issue for you.

Glad to hear it's fixed now. Happy trading!

Hey Sheila.  The problem you're having sounds eerily similar to something that was happening to me not so long ago.  My kids use my computer too, and they also have a bad habit of web-surfing in places where they pick up all sorts of adware & malware on MY machine, and for whatever reason, some of the stuff my system got infected with was causing the Adobe software used here to crash, or sometimes my computer would just lock up whenever I tried to print shipping labels:P  I downloaded a free copy of AVG virus scanning and cleaning software online and it's pretty much taken care of the problem.  Here's a link: free.avg.com/.  You can just download the free basic protection, and then set it to automatically run a system scan daily, if you like.  It will isolate and quarantine any virus, trojan horse, adware & malware it finds on your system.  Once you get everything cleared up, you will probably have to update your version of Adobe before it will run properly again.  I also stopped using Internet Explorer, and switched to Mozilla Firefox, which has much better security features and constant security updates.  I actually like it better now that I've gotten used to it.  Your problem may not be as serious as the one I had, but if you have web surfing kids using your machine, you might be surprised at the odd things that start showing up on it when you run some sort of virus scanning software:P

Good information Kim!  You can also go to Kim Komando's web site and she has some free spyware programs you can download as well.  We've used them for quite awhile and they have been helpful to us.  I'll edit this post and put in the link when I finish.

I would also take Cindi's advice and just drop a note to the PBS Team.  Your current problem will in all likelihood not cause any problems with your account.  It does make sense however, to just let them know what happened.  To contact them, click the grey Help Center tab at the top of any page, choose the lower right hand box that comes up, and a feedback form will appear for you to use.  Hope this all helps!

Oh yeah, I should also mention that if you do switch to Mozilla Firefox (which I highly recommend if kids regularly use your computer), you will have to adjust the browser settings to allow pop-ups for this specific site.  It uses them a lot, and I'm pretty sure the labels won't download unless the security settings allow for it.  I couldn't even post to the forums until I figured out I needed to change my allow cookies setting for PBS:P  The setting is under the "tools" tab at the top of the browser bar.   You would select the tools dropdown menu, then click on "options", and if there is a check mark in the block pop-up windows box, out to the right of that should be a tab that says "exceptions".  You need to copy the url for  the PBS site, and paste it in the box.  You would also need to do this for any website you want to allow to run pop-ups.   Firefox is very user friendly, and it's easy to customize your privacy & security settings from the tools tab.  The cookies settings are under the privacy tab after you click on "tools" and then "options".  As for the Adobe software, I just updated to Adobe Reader 8 and everything works perfectly now.

Since you're posting your account is still active but those timed out books are no longer on your shelf. THey need to be reposted. I wouldnt' mail them out w/o checking to see if the requestors have other copies on the way. The system automatically reorders them if other copies are posted.  If it becomes a regular occurance your account would be put on hold until you cleared it up with PBS. But apparently 3 timed out requests at the same time did not trigger it for you..
