I just posted this is the Childrens Book forum and decided it would be best to do it here ... My daughters school is needing poetry books and I would like some suggestions as I am not sure what would be appropriate!  I don't want them to know who is donating so can't ask the literacy coach  lol  Thanks in advance!!

I'd get Jack Prelutsky for sure.  Then Shel Silverstein & Jon Scieszka.  There's a series of books about poets...can't recall the name - they're highly wish-listed here.

There's also the 20th Century Treasury that Prelutsky put together that's great.

I just remembered the series title of the poetry books - "Poetry for Young People".  There are several and they are really good.

I am not a teacher and I will be posting in a second because I was just handed a couple of boxes of children's books, most in fine shape.  However, in that box is one potery book.  Classic Poems To Read Aloud -  ISBN 1856979873.  Except for a name on the inside cover (written not scribbled) the book is in mint condition.  I don't think it was ever used.

I am just starting to sort through them, so if  you are interested let me know. I will be posting the books next week sometime.

Take a look at this book of concrete poetry. It has a lot of appeal for grades 4-6, got starred reviews, and was on the American Library Association Notable Books for Children list. It was published in both hardcover and paperback, but only the paper version is available on pbs at this time.

Technically It's Not My Fault by John Grandits

You can read some of the reviews by clicking on the "Buy from Amazon" link.

I really like a book called Hip Hop Poetry.  It comes with a CD.

I love the titles J.C. recommended. I also love Eileen Spinelli's "Feathers" and Paul Fleischman's "Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices." My 5th graders have also enjoyed some books that are written in the style of narrative poems: "Love that Dog" and "Hate that Cat" by Sharon Creech, and "Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse.
