Why would a 5 book boxed set be worth only 1 credit?

The topic of boxed sets is discussed by PBS in the Help Docs:

If each of the books bears a unique ISBN, you can Post each as a separate entity

  • this way, you will earn a credit for each.

If the "box" holding the boxed set bears an ISBN and the listing for that ISBN is for the whole set, you can post with that number, BUT

  • this way, you will earn only ONE credit for the SET.

There is not a way to post the books individually yet require one member to take all of them and award you all of the credits for the one bulk request.

If you do post the books individually and want to send them all to one member:

  • you can start a topic in the Book Bazaar Discussion Forum to advise members that you have a boxed set.
  • Another member may be glad to learn of this and request all of the books from you using the bulk request "order more books from this member" feature.

If you have already Posted and sent a boxed set thinking you would get 1 credit for each book:

  • If there are 3 or more in the set you can contact the requestor and explain your error - that you did not understand that you would not be getting 1 credit per book
  • You can ask the requestor to give you extra credits directly - you can compromise on the number.  For example - you can ask for a total of 2 credits (1 from the system, 1 gifted by the requestor) for a 3 or 4 book set, and for anything over 4 books, you can ask for a total of 2 books per credit.
  • Since members save postage sending multiple books at once, getting 1 credit for every 2 books in the set will still be a good deal.
  • Requestors can give credits directly following the instructions in How do I give credits to other members?

PBS is designed to give only one credit (two credits for audio books) for any given ISBN, even if the ISBN is for a set of books. There is no way currently to get more than one credit when listing a set of books. The site is set up strictly for "1 ISBN = 1 credit" for printed books. You can list books in a set individually with their own ISBNs, but this breaks up the set and is an especially bad arrangement or idea for a boxed set. Your only other recourse is to list the set in the Book Bazaar, but that doesn't resolve the problem inherent in the system.

You can bring this problem to the attention of the PBS Team by sending feedback to Contact Us at the bottom of any PBS page under the "Company" heading. If you do so and get a reply, you can post their reply here.

I had no idea that boxed sets were valued at 1 credit.  Thanks for the info.

If I want to get rid of any boxed sets I will give them to goodwill or HPB.

You could check first and see if each book had its own ISBN.  Sometimes they do.

Good to know Diane! Thanks!

Here on this site there are several thread for trading books.  I'm used to only one wl multiples thread on the DVD site.

Could someone offer a 5 book set in the Bazaar for 3 or 4 credits?

Would it have to be posted in one of the "special threads"?

Yes, the books can be posted individually if they each have their own ISBN (many do).  Or they can be posted together in one (or more) of the Book Bazaar threads, the poster can ask for various credit deals as incentive for the entire set (if they wish) so long as they do not exceed one credit per book.

Yes.  You'd save quite a bit on postage, mailing them all to one person, and they'd save on credits.  It's a win/win.

The only time you can't start your own thread is when they're wishlisted.  Those have to go in the wishlist multiples thread.

I think you can still use the WL Multiples thread for a series even if, for example, the first 2 are not WL'd but the last 3 are.
