The book is intended for unison choral singing, for class or individual teaching, and for amateur or professional singers, at home or on the concert stage. It has been made as practical as possible, with texts, translations and arrangements particularly adapted to school and college use, but also aimed at all those who are interested in the great songs of the world.

Many of the numbers provide excellent material for vocal training, as in the flexibility required by Carey's Pastoral or Gounod's Sing, Smile, Slumber, the volume and range of Schubert's Omnipotence or Beethoven's Glory of God in Nature, the legato of Passing By or My Lovely Celia, the accurate intonation stressed in so mod-ern a piece as Moussorgsky's Cradle Song to the Poor, and the clear enunciation demanded by Morley's lively Now is the Month of Maying or Becker's ecstatic Days of Spring.
