"55 Ways," now in a fully updated Third Edition, is a guide to routes and trails leading the hiker, skier, and boater to some of Southcentral Alaska's finest wild, beautiful back country. The trips are chosen to offer a balance among woodlands and tundra hikes, some float trips, and several winter trips for playing in the snow. There's something here for all skill levels, from short jaunts to treks far from the road system, three to five days in lengh, requiring wilderness experience. Every hike is described in detail, and highlights such information as mileage, elevation gain, best season, maps to take along. Individual sketch maps and photos of the alluring scenery round out the package.
The authors, both long-time Alaskans with years of experience in the outdoors, point out that since most of the trip descriptions include alternate routes and destinations, a complete tally of trips in the book would total "135" ways - a wealth of outdoor destinations with something new for every Alaska hiker, both resident and visitor.« less
