When requesting books, I really try to peek at the other member's bookshelf (as suggested by PBS).  I'm even happy so look through several pages (50 per page).

But over 600 on their bookshelf?  Life's too short folks crying  so...what's your limit?  To be a good neighbor, how many pages/books will you search?

Three pages.  That's 150 books.  I will sort bookshelves by genre, then my limit is still 3 pages within a genre.

Only a couple of pages usually.  I don't even bother to sort by genre anymore because I read pretty much any genre that's out there.

Yeah, like Emily, I'll first sort by Genre and then by Author.  For large shelves like that I will skim through my favorite authors pretty quickly.

I sort by Genre; no need to wade through stuff I have no interest in.

I usually will go through 3-4 pages, occasionally 5, but no more than that.  Too many books to wade through and too little time.  Pat

I sort by genre. But I only bother with all pages when someone is offering a deal.

If I'm just looking to order something extra from someone's shelf, usually I am looking for more books in a series. If I am ordering a special kind of book from them, I might also go look and see if they have more of that genre, or whatever.

Usually I don't just go randomly pck out extra full credit books to order from the same shelf, I normally have a specific reason to go looking, and in that case, the more books, the better chance I have of finding the thing I'm looking for.

I will search through up to 6ish pages, but that's only if the books are ones I seem interested in.  If after a couple of pages nothing jumps out at me, I stop looking usually.

I'm with Amber - if there are any books with authors or subjects that have interested me in the past on the member's first couple of pages of inventory, I'll go on for maybe as many as eight pages, but if it's nothing but books I wouldn't buy for a quarter at a yard sale, I'll give up.

With larger bookshelves I'll re-sort their list by date/descending. Then I'll just check out the first page or two of the more recent books posted.

Some good ideas here on how to get the most out of searching a large bookshelf  heart  without necessarily looking at hundreds of entries!

Since I learned how to sort by my reminder list, I usually only do that plus about 2 pages.

Gotta ask Shannon, how do you sort by your Reminder List?

The main reason I look, is I'm watching for some classic & literature titles.  Since these have been around awhile, there are other editions not on my wishlist that I might be interested in.

I must not be a good neighbor, 'cause I pretty much never look at shelves...mostly my wishlist orders for me and because it's all set to auto-request, often books are accepted and mailed before I even know they're ordered. It's pretty rare that I order a book in the system already.

Usually, just by scrolling down the first page, you can tell the kind of books they read. If there is nothing there to my taste, I don't bother with a second page.

I am quite often surprised when I order a book I want, and then look at the poster's Bookshelf, to discover that the book I just requested is very untypical of their reading list.

Same as Pat O. and I try to keep my shelf to only around 200 books.

I agree with Thomas. If there is nothing on the first page I don't go any further.  I buy my books usually at a second hand shop and try to get books that are a little unusual to offer up on here. My usual fare is not something I can normally find at yardsales in my area which really is irritating for me but lucky for others I guess.
