This is weird.  I just posted this book: A Gate at the Stairs, by Lorrie Moore.

On the page for this book it says Members Wishing: 78, but it has not been put on Wish List Hold.

I also see that it is available for purchase from the PBS Market.

Is this a bug, or does PBS block books they are selling from Wish Lists?

Do you think it's a bug?

Answering my own question (maybe):  There is no "Order This Book" button for the book I posted that has 78 members wishing.

So . . . does this mean that we cannot post books for swapping if PBS is selling it?

(Or that we can post them, but no one will be able to request them?)

If so, that does not seem right or fair to me.  People should be allowed to chose whether they want a used copy or a new one!

There's no 'Order This Book' button because the book is wish listed. Therefore, it isn't actively available to order from a member. PBS does not block any books from being posted for swapping, ever, whether they're selling it or not.

Did you check your bookshelf to see whether it was on the one hour auto-request hold? That wouldn't show up on your main account page.

I'm a newb so after I speak let the members who have actually seen this answer as well.

But to allay some of your fears.  I believe that when others have asked similar questions it has been said that if the person wishing for the book has it on autorequest then the book will be placed in limbo (allegedly to allow them to order more books from your bookshelf).  I think that it can stay in this limbo for a few hours before it will be placed in your "Requested from You" category.

I haven't personally experienced this but I believe I'm correct in the replies given to similar questions.

D'OH!  Of course there would be no "Order This Book" option.  Not with 78 people wishing for it!  Thanks for reminding me of that.

There's no indication on my bookshelf that this book is on auto-request hold.  Also, the "Mail to a Friend" button is there, which you would think would not be available for a book on wish lists.

So these books never show up in the Wish List Hold tab?  Then maybe that's what is happening to this book.

FYI, a few hours ago I posted several books.  9 of them were on Wish Lists, but only 8 are showing in the Wish List Hold tab.  This book is the only one in "limbo."

Thanks, Everyone, for your help.

The book has been requested, and all is well in the universe again.

laugh

Edited to add: But it really would have been helpful if it had shown up on my Wish List Hold tab.

Instead of showing up on the tab it will be marked on your bookshelf.  I know you said you didn't see anything, but I missed seeing it as well at first.  When you look on your bookshelf there will be a (!) in gray next to the book and if you hover over it it will tell you it's on the 1 hour hold thing.

Shannon's correct - when a book is wishlisted but the #1 person does NOT have it on auto-request, it goes to Wish List Hold tab.  If it's auto-requested, it's pending the 1 hour "buyer remorse" and will be on your bookshelf with the gray ! - once the hour has passed, it will be on your Requested From Me tab.

As for books that are being sold in the market, there is no connection to that and the FIFO system (ordering from other members).

Oooooooohh,

I've found it the gray (!) thingy.  Will this show up if someone requests a book directly from your shelf as well.  I've had some worried moments with the deals in the book bazaar when a member has said they ordered a book from me for a deal in a PM but the book didn't show up until a few hours later.  I was worried they had used FIFO instead.

Will this show up if someone requests a book directly from your shelf as well. - Yes, it will show up on any book in the 1-hr buyer's remorse period.

A nifty trick to get rid of the buyer's remorse is for the requester to PM from their Book's I've Requested tab. Once the requester sends a PM from there, the request shows up for the sender.

Good tip Melanie, not to mention it will show the book title in the subject line.  That will help greatly.

There is no limbo time of a few hours to allow time for them to use hte Order More button.  That stays up until the address us accessed.  So if you come on and find an autorequested WL book was posted during the night, if they haven't printed the label, the Order More Button should still be there.  I don't know why they have the 1hrs Buyers Remorse hold on auto request books.  I'm here a lot (way too much) and I never notice one of my autorequested WL books during that 1 hr time frame.  It's not like there's any sort of notice (that I can tell-I only get emails about WL offers I need to accept).

Ahh, the intricacies of the PBS web site!

What confused me, too, was that when this happened I had been posting about 20 books.  For each book I checked to see if anyone had it on their Wish List, and then put those books in a separate pile after I posted them.  When I was all done I had 9 books in the pile, but only 8 books on Wish List Hold.

So then I thought I must have skipped one, and went back through the pile and compared it to the Wish List Hold tab.  That's how I found the one book that was not listed there.

So then I checked my Bookshelf and saw the book was there, but there was no obvious indication that anyone was wishing for it.   And I saw the "Mail it to a Friend" button, which still doesn't make sense.  You would think that would not be available if a book is on auto-wish.   Plus the "Mail it to a Friend" button is much more prominent than the little grey thingy.

Anyway, it was all very confusing but now I've learned a couple of things about how the site works, so it's all good!

Linda,

They recently changed the site so that every book has the 'Mail to a Friend' option. People were getting tired of having to 'post' dummy books to be able to use that feature, so they expanded it to every book. Since you don't have to actually post the book to the system to use the feature, but can just click the button and enter the address info and such, it makes perfect sense for the feature to be available on every book. Of course, this also means, as you saw, that when the book is posted, even if it's in the one-hour remorse period, it'll have the same mail to a friend button as all other posted books on a person's shelf do.
