How do you do that?  Is it complicated?

You use Alt-Codes.

Basically, you hold down the Alt key and press a numeric value on the key pad (it has to be the pad and not the keyboard). For instance, Alt 3 is ♥.

The link above shows all of them.

Don't you mean ☺ instead of :)? That's Alt 1.

-- Edit --

The picture looks a lot better in the text box than actually printed on the screen.

I just copied & pasted the graphics.  I can't seem to get the alt 1 thing to work.  Wonder why?

Are you using the keypad or the keyboard? It has to be the keypad.

You press down the alt key and hold it down. Then, you press the 1 key on the keypad. After you press (and release) the 1, you release the alt key and it should show up.

Once you get the hang of it, you can make all kinds of things depending on your level of imagination.

While these are fun to use here in the forums & even in your profiles, please be sure you do not use any of these alt-codes when doing book data edits, as they will not stay. When the data comes to the approver to review, they are converted to a different system which does not recognize the alt-codes unless re-imputted (is that a word?) by the approver.

This causes extra efforts for the approver, because they have to learn the alt-codes or edit your data to remove them. Even if the approver does follow along, then someone else comes to make another change, and they don't know the alt-codes or the next approver doesn't, then we have strange boxes and ? marks instead of the alt-code characters.

??????"???

OK, I'm using the keypad, I press alt, I press number key, I let off number key, I let off alt (in that order) and all I get are the question marks and a quote.  Any other suggestions?  Maybe I just have a weird keyboard?

Sherry, No problem.  It would not have occurred to me to use the graphics in editing book data.  :)  Have you had problems with this before?

Nope, I'm out of suggestions. Unfortunately, my technical knowledge isn't as great as I would like.

I've seen the question marks in the book data. Over 95% of those are curly quotes, ie. the funny looking little quotes that Microsoft Word uses by default. It looks to be both single and double curly quotes are causing the problems. Basically, the system can't take a paste from Word in the book data field.

Tim - That's the fun when you get to approve book edits!  (Just kidding!)  We have to change all the quotes and dashes so the system understands.  Even then, I've missed a few.

Sheena, mostly they try to use bullets. Those always come thru as ? marks! Makes your listing look a little wierd :)
