In rhyming text, two black cats take the reader through the alphabet on pages full of colorful illustrations.
I want to love this book just a little more than I actually do. The illustrations are fantastic, including all the typically scary Halloween things in a completely un-scary way. I'm guessing, because I'm no expert, but the illustrations look like paintings, which is something I haven't seen a lot of in kids' books lately, so I really like that detail. Plus, the end pages are illustrated, as well, and that's something I love in books and usually find only in much older ones. The images are colorful and incredibly detailed, so that you can return to them over and over and still see something new every time.
It's the text that fails to completely delight me. The rhymes are often clunky and awkward, with one short line followed by a long line, or vice versa, a pairing that throws off any chance at a rhythm in the reading. On the plus side, however, the text will introduce a lot of new, and sometimes unusual, vocabulary words (meandering and raucous leap to mind). The letter X features a recipe for "Extra Good Alphabet Soup in a Pumpkin" with complete directions for making it at home with help from Mom, which is a touch I always enjoy finding.
