I just purchased a Coby Tablet 2 days ago.  I very happy with it LOL   BUT I cant seem to figure out How to get ePub ebooks to play on it.  It has the Aldiko App pre-installed.

OK   Heres what I am doing & whats happening.

1 I download an eBook  2 Open it with Calibre 3 transfer the ePub to MicroSD..  Then get the message Cant Open??

Now I can do the same steps put the Reg SD Card into my son Literati  PLAYS GREAT!

Yes I am Importing them from SDmicro to the program Aldiko on the Coby.

What am I doing wrong?

Did you try putting them in a folder with the right name, like the last poster advised? Have you looked for earlier versions of the program?

X  can you suggest any?  I also tried Bluefire it was totally confusing to me.  So some thing simple.

I went to Aldiko.com thinking they post Basic instruction ....  All I found was threads complaining about this & that ugh!  You think IF they were going to make a web site they have Instruction on the product 1st or some where on site!   BTW this came PreInstalled on the Coby.

BTW the Coby came with GetJar where your supose to get apps....everytime I try to go there says I not authorised???    Anyway I downloaded Amazon for apps!  They work great!!

GetJar now working!   So any eBook reading Apps sugestions??

My question is why you bothered with a cheap tablet like that and didn't get a quality tablet, like the Nook Color. Refurbished ones are around $129. Even if the Coby was half that price, it is probably not worth it.

+1 Anne. Barbara, for the amount of money, time, and aggravation you have spent on all these various off-brand tablets, you could have gone with an iPad or a Kindle Fire or a Nook Tablet. If those don't give you the power you need, you could always go for a $400 quality netbook or a $400 small laptop. But honestly, I cringe in sympathy when I open these threads from you because every time it's some off brand product with some off brand program/app and I can hear your frustration. I truly think you need to go with the big boys on this one. Head to Best Buy and tell the guy what you want it to do and let them help you select the right machine.

Coby a good co I called them the other day for information they were a big help!  It plays movies & I have my Amazon eBooks on it But just need a way to read the ones I download from other sites.  I just cant find any basic inst on this Aldiko that came on it...sigh

+1 Nancy! That is what I *didn't* want to deal with, which is why I got the Nook Color. That + an SD card to make it an android tablet cost less than a Kindle Fire, and its open, so I have the Android market, the Kindle android market, the kindle app, etc.

I agree.

You know more now, and you need to make sure you do your research before you buy anything else. And if you don't know, check the internet, and only as a last resort ask the salesmen. They're not very up-to-date on a lot of their products, and most times I go in knowing more about a device than they do.

Cheap stuff and off brands won't save you any money in the long run if they won't do what you want. Do the research first, and you'll save yourself a lot of frustration, time and money. Remember, the cheap stuff is cheap for a reason, and it's usually not a reason that'll make you happy in the long run.

I have a few movies on another sdcard. I watched several movies...streeming. Tho that don't work away from home. Why I have a few on sdcard. Not the tablet its me...I just need to learn this app & how to use it. Just surprised no one on PBS uses it or can tell me how or even where to find instructions. I don't want to direct download/sideload them as this tablet is only 4gig. My sdcards are 8 & 16 gig...lots of room LOL

That's exactly the point, though. Tablets are meant to work with wi-fi or 3G. To get one that does not truly defeats the purpose of having a mobile media device. And honestly, the reason no one here knows the answer to your question and you're having a hard time finding answers on the web is because very few people have made the same choice you have to use a lesser product and the ones that do are having the same problems you are and there are no answers to make the device do what you want it to do. Ever been in Walgreen's during Christmas and seen those knockoff toys they carry? Just because it's white and has a rectangular shaped controller does not make it a Wii. Yet the box implies it does everything a Wii does and people buy them and then aren't happy because they really wanted a Wii, not a Walgreen's Wii. Same thing here.

Go back to Best Buy or HH Gregg. Tell them, I want a product that can stream movies, check my email, play You Tube. I want to be able to read from my Kindle app, my Nook app, and the library. I want an SD slot so I can sideload my content. I don't want to pay for an additional mobile data plan, so give me something that either has the plan built in like a Kindle, a built in air card, or a wifi that will pick up at free spots where I can download. I only need internet when I'm checking or downloading and I can wait to get to a wifi to take care of my needs, I don't need "right now this minute" access. And whatever other things you want it to do.

Find a salesman in there that you like and let them hook you up.

I did a lot of research on the various tablets, and that is why I chose the refurb Nook Color. I don't have a lot of money so had to make the best choice for the family. I wanted a good piece of hardware that wasn't locked in to one ecosystem. That's why I did not get the Amazon Fire. With the NC I can either boot into the NC OS, or boot into the Android OS that's on my 16 GB SD card.  I can stream Netflix, youtube, surf anywhere on the web, get all the free Android Apps from Amazon, read picture books with my children in the Amazon App or the Nook App, basically anything I want to do. No camera, but the kids have the Nintendo DS XL with a camera. Now if I had a DH who didn't care how many electronic toys I had, I'd ALSO have a Fire, and maybe a Galaxy, Lenovo or Vizio tab too. But since I could only choose one, the Nook Color (rooted) did everything I wanted it to do. I got the refurb from Best Buy (on line) so if it had any problems, I could take it to the store. I have not had ANY problems.

Oh I have yet to hook the NC up to a PC to try to side load content. One of these days I will try it out. I did d/l a book out of my gmail and read it on something but I don't recall which program. I think it was an epub. I will check it later. Also I can do that with a PDF and report back.

Barbara if its not too late, perhaps you could return the Coby and get a refurb Nook Color. I think you would be very happy with it!

Ok if your Coby is an Android tablet, go to the File Manager, select downloads, and select the book you downloaded from your email, tap it, and it will open. I don't even know what reader is being used. But this is how it works in an Android OS. Like I said I haven't tried side loading via the cord yet.

Correction--it brings up the Mantano reader. Do you have that?

So maybe instead of opening the Aldiko app, you should go to the document and open it in whatever the default reader is. Mine appears to be Mantano.

It has Document but no name or even what formate needs to be in .... so again I cant get any information on it.

I have another thought  ....  Tell me IF this will work.

I have & use the Amazon App for my Amazon eBooks  & I have converted the eBooks from other sights to Mobi thru Calibre    IF I sideload them into the sdcard Will thay play thru the Amazon app like they do on my Kindle??  On my PC this doesnt work...sigh.

Just surprised no one on PBS uses it or can tell me how or even where to find instructions.

I doubt that out of all the membership PBS has that this forum has a ton of followers. I'm partial to eInk readers myself, so know more about those than tablets, so I'm not much help on those.

As always, your best bet would be Mobileread since they specialize in all kinds of readers. If you can't find anyone using it there, then that's probably a good warning sign. I'd seen the reviews on Amazon before, and they're not good.

Sideloading something on an SD card won't do you any good unless the program knows to look there for the books. They can only open stuff in locations they're told to look by the programmer, and sometimes by the customer. If you're never given any choice inside the program about where to look for a file then it is expecting the file to be in a certain place, in a certain format.

The kindle files on you PC go to a specific place, and it's looking for .azw files. But you can't convert things to .azw that I know of, just mobi. If you were to put an .azw file in that folder, the PC program may see it or may not. Hard to test since I can't make an .azw file to throw in there.

On your tablets, most are closed so the customer can't root around inside and move things around. (Not unless they're rooted or hacked.) So odds are you're not only not going to be able to find the right location, you won't be able to move things to it.

If the app can't see them it can't open them.

Thanks Cindy!  I didnt think it would work...just a thought.

MR is a good suggestion ...  I posted a thread much the same as this one earlier today I have to go check see If anyone responded.  Problem is most people dont seem to be around on threads on weekends LOL

I searched the old threads on here X said in 2010 she was going to try Aldiko.  But no followup LOL  Not sure what the whole thread was about  so dont know the gist of the conversation.  Maybe she come back & post here what she thought of it.

Barbara as for opening mobi books with Kindle for PC that SHOULD work. (Assuming you use Windows). For me K4PC is set as the default mobi reader on my PC, so no matter where the file is located, it will open in the kindle app. If I don't want it to open in that I right click and choose "open with."

I'm not sure if my tablet came with Aldiko, I will check later.
