Somehow it survived and in the first decade of the 20th century its fortunes were revived under the influence of the great Colonel Stephens, king of light railways in Great Britain. The line passed to the control of the army during World War II - a number of camps were constructed along the route - and it remained under military control until it was largely closed in 1960.
