How important is it to read them in order? I want to send them to the soldiers through Operationpaperback.com.  I found 1, 3 and 4 at the thrift store for .25 each.  The libary has books 2,4 and then later ones but there's a wait for #2.

If I send 1,3 and 4 will whoever gets them be able to follow the series?  Will I be lost if I read 1 and 3 since I can't get them at the library?  I don't know if I'll have time to read them all.

I wish I had known what you were going to do Mary.  I just got (from Goodwill) books 4-7 and posted them about 3 hours ago!

OK thanks.  I guess I'll be reading books 1-4 by June 2nd.  Assuming I like them.

That's OK Marcia.  If I like them I'm just going to put the ones my library doesn't have on my WL. I think there are a few local Jim Butcher fans because I keep seeing his books on the FOL sale shelf and at the thrift store.  I finally decided to pick a couple up and give them a try.  Now of couse if I fall in love with the series they'll stop showing up at the thrift store. My library has a lot of them they just didn't have 1 and 3.  They say they are on order though. But who knows how long that'll take.  If I like book 1 then I'll pick book 2 up at the local bookstore or order it from Amazon and use the Prime 2 day shipping.

I read some where (maybe on Butcher's site?)  that if you had to skip a book or come in at a place other than the beginning, that starting with book 3 would be ok.  I believe Butcher said that a lot of back story about Dresden's life is revealed in that book and it fills in gaps from the first two.  That being said, there are relationships and other characters introduced in book two that are important as the series goes on.  When in doubt, read them in order.

I am currently re-reading Death Masks (#5) so I can read all the short stories that he wrote in-between the books.  I found them on his website jim-butcher.com.  Then once I finish them I can read Turncoat, the newest one.   I do love Dresden!

Well I'm hooked so far.  Enjoyed book 1 and just read the 1st 75 pages of book 2.  So I don't see myself having a hard time reading all 4 by June 2nd. Unless I decide that book 2 sucks. But so far it's good.

I read the first one and I think I read the second one. I realized I would get completely sucked into that series and decided to save it for next winter. ;) I'll probably start collecting them used and when I have a bunch of them I can get going on them. You definitely need to read them in order, as I understand. I do so love a down-on-his/her-luck detective!!
