I've got a problem many would like to have- I've got a lot of credits and a mountainous TBR.  My bookshelf hit some sort of "critical mass" on the FIFO lists the last few months and I get request after request!  I don't want to sell off credits because I know I'll use them eventually- but I would like to put my bookshelf on hold so that I'm not sending out books for awhile.

I know I can put my WL on auto-request and still get those, but am I able to make normal book requests while my bookshelf is on hold?  I'd like to be able to still request books with my credits but lay off putting out the cash to mail out others for awhile.

I couldn't find the answer in the Help Docs.

Thanks for your help- Sara

Yes, you can still order books with your account on hold, it just stops orders coming to your shelf.

I think there something about that year of membership mark. I have had the same thing. I put my shelf on hold quite a bit the last few months because the orders just wouldn't stop. Its nice, but I got sick of going to the PO all the time and didn't really need the credits.

I was going to post the same question!   One clarification please.  Will I still recieve notices of wish list books with my account on hold, even if I do not put it on auto request?      Thanks!

No if your account is on hold any WL books that aren't on autorequest will be passed on to the next person in line.  I would put a note in your profile about why you are on hold. So if you post a WL book or get offered one they don't worry that you'll ignore the request.  I have my account on hold now because I have 400+books in MT TBR, few books posted and only 9 credits left.  So I put a note in there stating that if I"ve ordered or posted a book that I'm still around to complete transactions.

I looked, and it's possible to put a checkmark on each book and then put them on hold. That way, you'll still  get notified if any of your WL books, but anyone looking at your bookshelf would just see that it is "empty." That way you wouldn't have to put your wishlist books on Auto Request and would have a chance to claim or decline them. I'm envious. I have only 4 credits left until one of my books is marked as received. My bookshelf must be too common, but that's OK. I don't mind starting out slowly.

and it's possible to put a checkmark on each book and then put them on hold - DO NOT do this if your books are very common. When you do this it removes the book from the FIFO line and will put it at the end of the line when you take the hold off. The only way to maintain your place in the FIFO lines with your bookshelf is to use the vacation hold.

Ooh, sorry. I did not realize that. Thanks for making that clarification. I guess it would work better to have WL books on Auto-Request, especially the ones that you are close to the top on.

Yep, I made that mistake this spring when they first came out with that feature. Using the "hold" checkmark things on your shelf actually removes them from the system and when you put them back on, you're at the end of the FIFO line, whereas using vacation hold just suspends everything in its place. Then you just need to make sure to auto-request the WL books you really don't want to miss. The ones you're not on auto-request for, you still maintain your place in line, but if books are posted, other people will jump over you to be offered the book.

I was just coming here to ask about this, as I only have a set amount for postage each month and when it's gone I need to put my account on hold.

Let me make sure on this though - I know on hold I can still get auto-requests, but can I come to the site and just request books normally?

I have a ton on my RL since my WL is full, and wouldn't want to miss one of them when they come up.

Yes, you can order books while your bookshelf is on hold.  You won't receive requests, but you can order anything you want.

And here's some good info:
