The member that has requested this book has put the following conditions in their account:

Hi, please refuse this request if the following applies:

FOR HARDCOVERS: 1) A book club edition (Without a price on the inside flap of the dust jacket, or they don't have a number line on the copyright page (10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1). This is usually applicable to hardcovers only.) 2) Missing the dust jacket?The member that has requested this book has put the following conditions in their account:

 

My dilema,

I have a book that is a firs edition but the price is cut out of the inside flap, but everything else is perfect.  I rejected this once because I would not want to lose a credit if I sent it, and the member was unhappy.  I just got another e-mail with a request for the book and it is the same request.  I cannot send the member a message as there is no way to know who it is.  There are 8 members waiting for this book and I do not want to waste a credit if a cut corner on the jacket is unacceptable.

What should I do?

If you are unsure, just decline.  You may want to wait a few weeks before reposting, or it will just be offered to the same person.

If she has conditions and you want to not send it to her, decline it due to conditions.  (After all, the price is cut out.  So, I can see where you might be worried.)  That way it will go to the next person in line wishing.

I declined it once and told the reason.  I got a new e-mail two days BOOOK REQUESTED and it is the same member   with the same restrictions for excepting the book.  There are 8 people waiting for this book.   Why would it not go to the next person on the list?

it must be some sort of glitch because if you decline due to RC then they cannot be offered your book and you should pass to the next person.

decline saying you can't send due to RC and see if it will pass to the next person. If not, then contact R&R and see if they can figure out what is going on

Just keep declining the RCs and eventually the system will get it right and move on to the next in the WL line. Make sure to mark, my book does not meet the conditions, not mark that it does and then cancel the order. I guess it is possible that the other people in the WL line are on hold so it keeps circling back to that same person, but once you say that your book does not meet RCs, its should never be able to be offered to that person again.

You do have to be persistent. This happened to me once a long time ago, and Robert explained that each time a person on the list doesn't accept the offer, your book offer goes back to the beginning of the line, even if you've already declined their conditions.

So, what probably happened to you is you declined the first person's conditions and it was offered to the second person. That person declined the offer so they're off the wish list now and you're back to the first person. You decline again, and your book gets offered to the new #2. Hopefully that person accepts, but if not, you repeat until you exhaust the whole wish list.

If the only person left is the one whose conditions you can't meet, then she gets moved to the reminder list and your book is left on your shelf.

Great!!

Thanks for a more detailed explanation.  Hopefully it will be excepted.  The book is a first edition of Wicked The life and times of the wicked witch of the west by Gregory Maguire.  It is pretty popular again since it is now a Broadway play.  I have noticed that it has been on request by a lot of people so I decided to put it out there and share it.  I expect it will go sooner than later.

If they are unhappy you are declining the request then they need to get rid of that price on the inside cover condition. But this does sound like a glitch.  Once you decline a book based on requestor conditions they are not supposed to be able to request that book from you again even if they remove their conditions.  If it keeps happening, I would let PBS know and maybe they can put a stop to it the never ending cycle.  So the book can go to someone else on WL or on your shelf.  HB's don't require a dust jacket so unless the person has conditions about that, then the dust jacket being slightly damaged doesn't make it unpostable. And you do NOT have to pm this person and describe the condition if they ask.  You can if you want to but it's not required.  Hopefully the system will fix itself and pass it on to the next WLer.

My understanding was that if you declined to send a book to a requestor because it didn't meet their conditions that it went back on your shelf in the same spot it was before but that your book wouldn't be available for that same requestor again.

I had the same thing happen--member wanted a kids book in very good or better condition. I declined and about a week later the same request came up.
 I declined with a message that this was the 2nd request from the same member..and that took care of it.

The person was just telling you that a  bookclub edition won't have a price on the dustflap so you know that it is a bookclub book.  If your book had the price cut off it wasn't a bookclub edition. If you have something like this come up again you should accept the  request, then PM the person and tell them why you weren't sure if they would want it and give them the option of canceling the request. The book you had met her conditions it wasn't a bookclub book and it had the dust jacket.  If you PM someone and they say they still want it , keep  the message until after the book is received without problems  as the message is proof you told them about anything questionable.

The only problem with accepting then PMing someone with a WL books is: then you are stuck waiting for this person to respond.  If they cancel the request, they go to the end of the line.  If you cancel, then you have to repost and then decline this person again, before it can go to the next person.  You are not required to PM someone about the condition of a book unless it's a cookbook or a textbook.  You can if you want to but, I've done this a couple times and it's inconvenient.  After having to wait 3 or 4 days for a response because the other person seems to only come on once a week, I decided I am no longer PMing.  I make the decision then and there it either meets their conditions or not. If the conditions are vague, then I hit decline. If my book appears to meet the condition then I hit accept.

I had the same thing happen just last week. I posted a WL book and received a request with conditions. I had to decline the request due to the conditions. There were 40+ other people in line for this book yet not even 1 hour later I got the same requestor again with the exact same conditions. I declined it yet again and it eventually went to the next person in line. This is actually the 2nd time this happens so I do think there is some kind of glitch in the system. There was no way it could have gone through 40+ people in less than one hour.

I don't think that price thing is part of the example of a book club edition at all.  It was just an example of how you can tell sometimes.  I think the problem here is the interpretation of her conditions, perhaps because of the way they are written.  I don't see it as she thinks it is a book club edition if someone clipped the price off the corner, just that BCE don't have a printed price there.

Is it a book club edition?  If not, and you get the request from her again, just send it.
