In the preceding chapter we mentioned, that SunDay Schools were originally the principal, if not the exclusive, object of the Edinburgh Parochial Institutions. To this important branch of the establishment we shall therefore first call the attention of our readers. And here, in opening, it may be right to notice a general objection, which has been made to all schools of this description. It has been said, that it is an improper thing to take the religious education of the young out of the hands of their parents, and to devolve this important duty upon any stranger. And doubtless, whatever may be said of the application of this principle, the principle itself appears to be perfectly sound, and to be strongly founded on a right knowledge of human nature.
