My Dad is dying and not expected to live beyond tomorrow.  I have to go to his home in TX and I'm in VA.  There's no access to computers at his home.  Going to the library is a possibility and one I've used in the past, but probably won't be convenient considering the family situation.  I just went to put my account on hold.  But it may be that I need it to be on hold past 01/31.  How do I extend it?  Is my WL on hold as well.  It doesn't matter if I get books, but I'm not sure how it all works beyond the rules.  I know about auto-wish and I only have 8 credits so I'm not sure I want to put my whole WL on auto.  And what about books that come in?  I'm expecting 5 books that are en route to me now - what do I do about those?  Should I PM the senders that I'm out of town and will respond to the receipt of the books when I return (which may be longer than anyone would wish)?  That doesn't seem fair to them since they didn't get DC so won't get their credits until I report them received.  I'm very concerned about this.  PBS is a very important part of my life and I don't want to mess anyone up.  Andy help and info is gratefully received!

I think everything you have already thought about doing you should do. You can extend that vacation hold date for as long as you need to.

It might not not even hurt to put a little info on your profile or bookshelf header so that anyone who is looking for you to mark their book as received won't miss it - either in a PM, on your profile or bookshelf.

As for your WL, maybe auto-request those you have enough credits for but just leave the others alone. You'll just be moved to the bottom of the list.

All the best to you and your dad. My thoughts are with you.

ETA - whoops! sorry for the incorrect WL info. The others who posted were correct.

Sorry you need to be going through this Ruth.

Why don't you put your shelf on Vacation Hold to the end of February. That way you will be covered if you don't get back before Jan 31. If you come back early, you can just cancel it.  I do that all the time.

For your WL, just auto-request what you have credits for and really don't want to miss. Anything that is not on auto-request you won't go to the end of the line you'll stay where you on the list, but get skipped over for current offers.

Take care.

Thanks, Amy, I really don't want to move to the end of a couple of WL's because I've already waited so long - but it wouldn't be the end of the world.  Does that mean that I can't put my WL on hold?  And how do I get the vacation extended to a later date than it is now?

Thanks, Melanie - I couldn't find a way to extend the time on the vacation hold.  It goes to the end of Jan. and I want it to go longer but can't figure out how since I can't seem to get the month to change!

When you click on Vacation Hold and it asks you to choose the end date click the little calandar thingy-next to where it says Today is a little arrow that moves it to the next month. Putting your account on hold also puts your WL on hold.

I would just put my whole account on hold. If you are #1 for any WL books -8 of those on autorequest and don't worry about the ones where you are lower on the list.  You won't lose your place in line while on hold. It'll just skip you until you unhold your account.

As for the books that are enroute to you: you can mark them received and hope they all get to you and in good shape.  Or you can just put a note in your profile about what happened and that you'll mark books received as soon as you can.  I think most people will be understanding.

As Mary pointed out, there are little arrows to move to the next months. I hate whoever came up with those little calendars with 6 different variations of > on them to change dates! I just click into the field that says 1/31/2009 and delete that info with the backspace or delete key, then type in the date I want to use.

Actually, with the Wish List, I think you don't start getting skipped over until you are #1 on the list.  So you might even move up a few spaces on some of your WL books while you are on hold.  :)

Oh, and what Mary said about setting for a longer hold.  I frequently go on hold when I don't have money for postage, and usually set it for a couple months at a time and just cancel earlier if I need to.

We'll be keeping you in our thoughts here in PBS-land.

Yeah you only get skipped over if you are at the top. Otherwise you just keep moving up the list as books get posted.  I went on hold for about 6months because I had a house to sell, a house to buy and a cross-country move to make.  I ended up with around 50 WL offers in the 2 months I came off hold.  Luckily I had been hording credits and posting WL books a lot of the time I was on hold.

Thanks to you all for all the great information.  I will definitely try it again.  I do happen to be at the front for many books (not ones that come into the system often).  But who cares - I'll deal with it.

Thanks for the good wishes.  My Dad has been suffering with dementia for 15 years and has been declining very slowly for 10 of them.  The problem with our family is we never know when to let go.  Very long life spans for most of them.  Living well into the 90's is common for them - but when you have dementia it isn't a pleasant thing. So I've come to believe that dying earlier and faster is a much better fate!

I will certainly miss coming here every day.  It's one of the high points of my day!  You're all such a great bunch of people.

Thanks again.

Ruth

Ruth I am so sorry for your family.

When I went on an extended vacation and had books coming in - I just marked them received before I left.  Yes - I took the chance that they might not come or there might be a problem with a book.  BUT - it was worth my peace of mind to take that chance.  Once I marked everything received and put my shelf on hold - I didn't have to THINK about it until i returned.

May God hold you in His hand during this stressful time.

Ruth, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I agree with the others who have said to go ahead and mark the books as received, it will give you one less thing to worry about.  In the event any of the books has a problem I will give you a credit for them.
