Niickiew-icz died in 1855. The centenary of this event 1955, was a year in which people of all nations paid tribute to this great poet and patriot. America's tribute is partially embodied in this volume. Under the direction of Clark Mills, a number of distinguished British and American poets undertook to translate some of Mickiewicz's finest work. Since few knew Polish, the poets worked closely with Polish scholars and linguists, who supplied them with literal translations. In this way neither accuracy nor poetic quality was sacrificed.« less
