I mailed a book out to a member using PBS postage. The details said on the 21st, it was delivered, but now on the 23rd the details say Addressee Unknown. Does it mean that the member no longer lives there and it was returned to the PO? Now what?

Sometimes it is just the carrier entering a wrong code number into the scanner.  Cold fingers might do that.  Or an unreachable road due to the weather?

You can PM the member about it.  They may need to contact their post office.  You should have already received your credit.

Ha! Now it is showing Enroute Lincoln NE (at the bottom), so thinking it was sent to the wrong address. Hoping now that it is on its way to the correct one.

Could be Connie, here's hoping the book arrives at the proper address!

Connie,  that can also happen if the person just moved within the same city......the PO will re-deliver to new address  in same area sometimes without  requesting additional postage since media mail is not forwarded for free. ( I'm assuming  here  that requestor failed to change address with PBS before you mailed the book)

JIC Connie, if it does come back to you it might be postage due.  You can pay the postage or decline and let USPS keep the book.  If you get a look at the label, contact the other member and ask if the address is correct.  Once in a while the PO muffs this and will return from valid addresses, this would be a matter to take up with your local PO.  If you don't hear back or the requester has failed to keep their address current (required under PBS Terms of Use) you can refer the matter to PBS admin.

We moved last spring, and USPS mail forward works fine for PBS and Media Mail.  Tthey did arrive with postage due (my fault for changing address late) but the packages were delivered just fine.

Since it's still an active transaction, I recommend reprinting the label now (or saving it in a file on your hard drive) so you'll have a copy of the address handy. You might also want to PM the requester and ask her to confirm that her address is valid. Then if you need to go to the PO to claim the package you can take the address and a printout of the other member's PM explaining that the address is correct and this is a PO error.

Thanks everyone for your advice. This has never happened to me before, lol. I noticed today that the book has reached my local PO. So will wait to see what happens next. On top of all this I have been summoned to jury duty tomorrow so my daytime access to the PO will be non-existent until Saturday.

I did pm the receiver and he pmed me back saying he has had the same address for the last 15 years. I have no idea why it says it was delivered then sent back to me. I'm hoping it will come today and my carrier will come to the door.

Just adding to the mix that another book that says it was delivered a couple of weeks ago apparently was stolen along with the receiver's other mail. <sigh> I have already received both credits for these books by using PBS postage. I just want them to reach their destinations.

The threads here have had posts in past year where members report mailing out things where addresses were correct, yet the PO made a mistake and claimed mail was undelverable-- in that case, you just take it back to PO and they re-mail it again without charging you.  I had that happen last year with a member here who is just a couple hours away from me in FL.   Got there the 2nd time no problem!

Just curious, but you didn't mail the book in a used Priority Mail envelope, did you?

I've also had a damaged book come back with strange tracking codes.  Arrived in a plastic bag with a xeroxed apology.

oh geez!

1- I was on Jury this year but not empanelled

2- looks like you should really contact the PO.  go there with a printout of scans and ask what the heck?  also should bring the email from requestor, the one that says it IS correct address, like another suggested

Connie, I had this happen as well, and it was just a substitute mailman. I contacted the requestor and she (he?) said the same thing, and I took it back to the PO and told them that it was a confirmed USPS address. They sent it on without extra postage and all was well. Same with you, I got PBS QuickCredit, but I still wanted the book in the right place.

This whole thing is strange and has never happened to me since I joined PBS. Anyways, the book finally went lost, I got my credit because I used PBS postage and he got his credit back after it went lost. He had pmed me that his address has been the same for 15 years and he's never had this happen to him since he joined PBS. So, he said he would keep looking for and I told him I hoped he would finally get it.

Fast forward to today, one month to the day I sent the book. The mailman rings the doorbell and there is this book in his hand, lol. I wish it could talk about its adventures... The mailman said it was being returned to the sender (me) because of the receiver's address being unknown, and that will be $2.58...surprise Well, because this book has been who knows where and I finally could get my hands on it, I paid it. So, I pmed the guy and asked him to please give me his address as I wanted him to get it. My instincts are telling me that if the address he gives me is the same as on the package to just forget it. I don't feel like going through this all over again and would just repost it. But, I don't know what PBS thinks I should do.What would you do?

These are the last details in my transaction archives:

If the receiver confirms his address I would take it to the post office and chew arse that I had to pay to get the book back when the address was correct and make them resend it for free and demand a refund of the money I paid to get the book back from the carrier that should have never came back in the first place.

Melanie: It says right on the envelope "Not able to forward". Still waiting to hear from the receiver.

"Forward" seems to means the PO cannot send it to any address other than the one printed on the package. That would be because it's media mail which is not typically forwarded (though it can happen as some have said). Or that there is no forwarding order in the system, which of course there wouldn't be, if the address is right. In this case, assuming the recipient confirms his address is correct as printed, somewhere down the line the package was mis-handled (and mis-stamped as unable to forward, obviously) and it went round and round til it came back to you.

If the requestor confirms his address is valid, you are within your rights to ask to have the second postage you paid (for sending it back to you) refunded and the package should be able to be sent, though I think that "not able to forward" stamp needs to be obscured. I would ask the PO too, if the printed barcodes (the ones the sorter machines put on the package in transit) should be lined out, since something in that data may be what triggered the whole grand tour. Perhaps there was a mis-keying of the addess information embedded in it.

I had the exact same thing happen to me once, correct address, etc. I had used PBS postage so I contacted PBS and explained that I'd sent the book, it came back as wrong address, the recipient confirmed the address as correct. They refunded my postage and suggested that I print out a new label and send it again...apparently the bar code that was printing was wrong and that it had been corrected in the system. I did as they suggested and had no more problems, the recipient got her book. The one thing that strikes me as different from your story, because I had used PBS postage that included delivery confirmation, I did not have to pay when the book was returned to me, so you might want to check with PBS about that too.
