I just had a book requested which had requestor conditions that ran something like this (Working from memory, of course, and I've ommitted the website name):
No "poor" condition books, please. Only "good", "very good", or "like new" books. I'm a member over at the new bookswap site (name ommitted). Its an amazing site and you can print out your postage for free at home so no more trips to the post office! It's at (website address ommitted) and you should come join me!
The only place that I'm sure that advertising other sites in forbidden is in the Discussion Forums, but this struck me as very odd and against the spirit of the place. The book in question was in what I consider to be good condition, but from the phrasing above it sounded like she was using bookseller terms, not PBS terms, and I wasn't sure that it would meet the "good" criteria for a bookseller (which in my experience has meant something more like "like new"). So I denied her requestor conditions and explained why, and also made a brief comment about advertising other sites. Should I have done anything else? Actively promoting other book trading sites, especially if it's going to benefit the "seller" by getting credit for referrals, is a no-no on this site. RC's are to be used to specify book condition only. Report it to PBS using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page. Report it as a "problem" to the powers that be. It's unlikely the person will be kicked off the site, unless this has been a repeated problem and has been warned before.

Yeah, I agree with what Jane said - I'd report it. Also, not that you asked, but this person's RC's are odd. I'd imagine that he/she is turned down a lot as "good" is pretty subjective! |

Funny thing about the conditons... The cardinal rule for this site is "Good condition, not excessively worn". So just how is that RC different from the standard site conditions? Makes you wonder what they consider to be "good"... |

Well, I followed everyone's recommendation and contacted the PBS team. They thanked me, confirmed that there should be no advertising on any part of PBS, and said that they would talk with this person. So, the situation is under control. Thanks for the advice! |
