A HC book has been requested from me.  There were no RCs.   The book is in great shape, the dust jacket is not. The dust jacket is wavy (water damage?).

I know I can send the book without the dust jacket.  But is there any reason to include it?

Yes, I would include it, I do have a RC about dust jackets, but if I didnt, I would rather have it than not, even in bad condition.

Unless there is something possibly gross on it, like food stains or mold, keep it.

The book requestor can always throw it away themselves if they don't want it.

I agree with Sara. I think you should send it.

nope, do not send a damaged DJ !!   You are asking for a RWAP!  DJ is not required so why risk it?

DJ is not required so why risk it?

If someone RWAPs a dustjacket when they don't have a RC, they are in error. There is no risk in sending it.

My library store sells high demand brand new hardcovers that don't have dust jackets for 50 cents even when they have other copies for $5 or $6. Why? Cause nobody wants books without dustjackets.

One easy solution would be to send a message to the requester and let them decide whether they want it or not.

I agree with Charles' suggestion.

I agree with Charles and Sara. Dust jackets are not required but many people want them even if they are not in the best shape. And they are easy to throw away if undesireable. Like Jeanne said though, some people do not realize that the condition of a dust jacket has nothing to do with making a book postable (barring an RC) and will complain. So I would send the PM and if you don't hear back, just send it with the book jacket. Covers all your bases and leaves the option to the requestor.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I did pm the requestor. (why didn't I think of that!)  Their response was to send the book with the dust jacket.
