Ladies (and the occasional Gabaldon-reading gentleman) --

New member Debbi L/debster911 is brand new to the Outlander series, having only read book 1, and not yet seen the Starz series.  She's interested in talking all about what she has read, though, without the risk of spoilers.  And, perhaps some of you have advice on reading the series -- whether to read the Outlandish Companion, if/when to read the Lord John titles, etc., have tidbits of knowledge to offer, or would just like to bask in the wonderment of someone who still has so much of the storyline still ahead of her.

So, I've filled her PM-box with what advice I had to offer, and would like to open the floor here to general advice and discussion of book 1 (Outlander) only, please, with no spoilers.

Welcome aboard, Debbi, and you've got a heck of a literary journey ahead of you!

I'll start the discussion by saying that I'm still working through book 8 (dang thing is so heavy!), but I've loved all the books, and got my husband into them, which in turn led us on a trip to Scotland in 2000.

ETA: By no spoilers, I mean no spoilers from books 2-9, like about the time Claire and Jamie get abducted by space aliens, that sort of thing. wink  Talk about book 1 freely, all you want.

I got into the series a few years ago.  One of the great things is that you can read quite a bit before running out of subject matter.  I also enjoyed reading a chapter or two every night of the later books, so I could spend time with my friends from the books.  I haven't read Lord John, as I haven't really been able to get into them, but I may at some point.

I wouldn't read any of the Lord John book until after reading Voyager.  I think listening to the audio books helps immensely with the pronunciation of the Gaelic.

The Outlandish Companion is a good resource for the series. I use it occasionally when I need to look up something quick (I could google it though).

I found the series in 1992 right before my second sons birth. My sister had gotten the book through a book club. I still have that book!

Yes, we will fight over Jamie!!! LOVE IT!

The series is like revisiting friends like Jennie said...maybe a passion...or an obsession!

my Boss made me read it! I thought at first ugh a period book, flip through the first few pages and give it back saying (yawning it bored me sorry), but NOPE, I'm hooked except my other boss has #2 & 3, I need more input on the HUNK!!!!!

I've watched a few shorts on Youtube but nothing comes close to seeing it from Start to finish.

Nothing right now. THey are in mid season hiatus. Outlander will resume in April.

I think they did a fabulous job with the last three pisodes. The wedding was really well done and the last one was a nail biter! Even though I knew what was going to happen...I was like...OH how are they going to do this.... I am glad they have pulled Franks POV. It can't be exactly like the book or it would get long and tedious...

You're too late, Debbi.  The fine women here already know me, and they know I'm no Lady. devil

And I agree with Maria -- Frank is a weenie.  But who wouldn't look like a weenie when compared to Himself?

surprise How it Starts out with Roger, and it does'nt explain that she's back in present time, until she introduces Brianna, and she's described how she looks.

Plus I guess I was expecting to hear that she was leaving just for a wee bit, and WHAM she's there. Not open the book and she has a grown child and back visiting the Reverand's great nephew???

I guess I'll learn more when I read more (only on page 27 lol), I seriously thought I was reading the wrong book lol

That was my sense when I started Dragonfly too -- did I miss a book in between?  It will sort itself out as you get deeper into the book.
