Last week I recieved a book that had been on my reminder list for a long time , I ordered it because it was the only copy on PBS and the person was offering 2/1 so I did get a freebie.
Anyway , I had to mark it RWAP ( which was the first time I'd ever done that) It was not easy for me to do that, I thought about it the whole day. I never want to cause trouble for anyone. Before I made up my mind, and to make sure I was doing the right thing , I asked my daughter ( without any hints) " How does this book look to you" She said it looks like it got all wet. and then asked my husband , his said the same and that was why it was very stiff because it dryed wet. I also , checked in the help part.
Forgot to mention the problem to you all...lol About the last half upper right hand was very stiff and the last page had a water line. At this time I can't afford to lose credits and I cant repost it ( its not up to my standereds) So I'll have to put it in a unpostable list. Its on several peoples reminder lists. I would take a picture like alot of you recomend but , last Friday at my daughters band concert my camera quit working . I dont what the problem is. I just got a pm from her today , and dont know if I should just not respond and leave it unresolved. Hers' her pm to me

Sorry but the rules clearly state she needs to return the credits BEFORE you send the books back. Just loved how she slipped in that she got the book from here and had no issues with it. And if she only looked the book over without opening it up then nope she'd not see the issue.
Do you have any acess to a camera phone (friend maybe?) and have them take a pic and email it to you.
Yet another "send it back and I'll give you back your credit later" PM. Joy.
You're sure the book is unpostable, that's all she needs to know. Based on what you've told her she can either choose to return the credit, or not. She doesn't have the right to issue ultimatums.
I'd probably just restate that the book is not postable, ask for a credit return by XX date or the transaction will be marked as unresolved, point her to the help docs, and leave it at that.
And don't get worked up over it, you didn't do anything wrong. If people that sent out books like this showed as much concern then there would be far fewer problems to begin with.
Well, first of all, there is no need for you to feel bad. You did not cause a problem, you received a problem.
And keep in mind that this problem (for both you and her) revolves around a dollar amount of $2.50. It's not life and death. No reason to feel bad about it at all. It's not like you want to repossess her house or something.
Having said that, though, there is no reason why you shouldn't have your $2.50 back, since you are the recipient of the problem, not the cause.
It is very unfortunate that you can't take a picture, though. That is really the best way to prod someone into seeing the damage that they "missed". Especially the someones that want to "see" the issue by getting their book back.
In any case, if there is absolutely no way to get a picture, then send her back something like this:
You may not be aware of this, but the PBS rules state that if a member wants their books back in a problem transaction, they must compensate the receiver for the postage for the return, in addition to the original credit refund for the problem book. This postage compensation can be a second credit in addition to the credit refund, or, if you would like to send me stamps, that would be OK, too. You can read these rules for yourself here: http://www.paperbackswap.com/help/help_item.php?id=344 (the bullet points in the first section address this topic)
This book has clear water damage. I will not be able to post it again on PBS due to this damage. If you feel unable to refund the credit for it, I will mark the transaction as "Unresolved" after 5 days.
Thanks very much!"

Unfortunately Lisa, the reply you received isn't all that unusual for a RWAP. "I received it from PBS" (somehow implying that automatically makes it postable) and holding your credit hostage until you return the book are both fairly common for contested RWAPs.
Frankly, I have three unpostables currently sitting on my computer desk...all PBS (received in the last 3 weeks), and all received unpostable due to writing/underlining on text pages. So that defense doesn't hold much water.
The camera phone idea has merit, just e-mail it to yourself and post it to Photobucked (etc.) and pm the addy. I have found it helpful to make sure my pics show the actual water mark, as other liquid damage can be difficult to identify in pictures. Natural light can also be helpful.
Sara has great wording for these things
