eh. Cheesy. There are lots of better vamp stories out there...try Laurell K. Hamilton, Kelley Armstrong, Kim Harrison, Mary Janice Davidson, Charlaine Harris, even the 1st few Anne Rice books.

Fast read. Words floated right off the page. Kept my attention from page one to page 370. Did not see the twists and turns coming, very pleased that Mrs Medeiros had me fooled. Loved the relationship between Caroline and her sisters. Loved the instant chemistry between Caroline and Adrian. Not as much fluff as I expected, which I really appreciated. I'm not as much a romance reader as I am a vampire reader, so I really appreciated being spared the contrived and gag inducing romance dialogue that some romance books have.

This book is a 4 star book for me. The lack of five stars is because I'm a little disappointed in the revelations as the book is coming to a close. Not a fault of the book or the author, it's just for us die hard vampire enthusiasts, this one isn't what you think you're getting into. Not wanting to give anything away, I thought I was getting into a good sexy vampire story and it's not quite that (the vampire part not the sexy part... it has just the right amount of sexy) But I was pleasantly surprised with how Medeiros weaves the vampire into the story, but he does not take center stage in this book.

Vamp lovers and romance lovers alike it is my opinion that you'll love this book and the author. Definitely worthy of trading on PBS!

~ Great paranormal historical romance - intense and mysterious hero is wonderful! (4 stars) ~

I am a huge historical romance fan but have never read any paranormal ones and didn't actually know I was until a ways into the book. I have read two Teresa Medeiros books - ONE NIGHT OF SCANDAL and YOURS UNTIL DAWN - and they were both just regular historicals, so I didn't realize she wrote anything else. The book was a great historical romance and for anyone who is put off by the paranormal/vampire aspect, don't be - AFTER MIDNIGHT is a great introduction into the genre of paranormal romances.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are well-written and engaging, the secondary romance is sweet, the mystery subplot is an essential part of the plot and romance and so not an unnecessary addition that just drags on, and the chemistry and sexual tension between the hero and heroine are great!

MAIN CHARACTERS:
Caroline Cabot (24) is the elder of three sisters and has been taking care of her two younger siblings since their parents died eight years ago (or six years ago - it changes - note to editor). She's a strong and intelligent heroine who is easy to like; her love for her sisters is obvious and so of course she feels a great amount of guilt for the fact that she's unaccountably drawn to her sister's potential suitor (all works out very nicely though, with no resentment, hard feelings, or misunderstandings). All three of the sisters are great characters - very different, but all of them are three-dimensional and none of them flatly drawn.

Adrian Kane, Viscount Trevelyan (27) is an absolutely wonderful hero! He's dark and mysterious and seductive, but he's also kind, sensitive, has a sense of humor and feels great love and loyalty for his younger brother, Julian. Something I greatly appreciated was that Adrian is not one of those anti-love heroes who won't admit he's in love when he is - if a guy said to me the things that Adrian says to Caroline ... ::sigh::

GREAT LINE:
"I don't want to marry you. I don't want to want you," he added fiercely, taking one measured step toward her, then another. "And I sure as hell don't want to love you. But, God help me, I just can't stop myself."

SIMILAR BOOKS:
If you enjoy the older-sister-finds-her-hero premise, you might also like THE VISCOUNT WHO LOVED ME (Bridgerton Series, Bk. 2) by Julia Quinn (the whole Bridgerton series is great, so I would recommend them all) and Gayle Callen's HIS SCANDAL, which is a very light and enjoyable read, the second book in Callen's "His" Series.

BOTTOM LINE:
A great historical romance with a paranormal twist; I'm not normally a paranormal romance reader but I really enjoyed this book. The hero and heroine are great and I can't wait to read the follow-up book - AFTER MIDNIGHT is followed by THE VAMPIRE WHO LOVED ME.

I read lots of vampire romance and this was the first "period" vampire book that I've actually liked. It has flavors of both, the historical romance and the forbidden love element that comes with vampire romance. Warmly sensual, not hot. I didn't LOVE it and although I have the next book in the series, I'm not in a hurry to read it. But it was worth reading.

You can't compare this book with Laureel Hmilton and Sherilyn Kenyon. This is classic vampire romance set in 1800's. The brothers and sisters in this series of two books stand togther and bet all odds together as a family. Good and easy read.

"Our sister is marrying a vampire."

When the ever practical Caroline Cabot first hears those words from the lips of her fanciful youngest sister, she accuses Portia of having a wild imagination.

But when she discovers their sister Vivienne is actually being courted by Adrian Kane, the mysterious viscount rumored to be a vampire, she decides to accept his invitation to a midnight supper and do some sleuthing of her own. To both her delight and her dismay, she soon finds herself falling under Kane's bewitching spell.

After all, what's a proper young lady to do when her sister's suitor arouses more than just her suspicions?

The eldest and most sensible of the three Cabot siblings, Caroline is naturally concerned that her sister Vivienne has lately been keeping company with the infamous Adrian Kane, Viscount Trevelyan, the enigmatic nobleman whom most of the Ton firmly believe is a Vampire.
Surely, it is nonsense. And yet...
The brooding gentleman inhabits a dark castle and is never seen in the daylight embarking nightly on mysterious excursions to who knows where. And from the first moment Caroline encounters the handsome, hypnotically compelling viscount, she is shaken by a fevered desire for the man that borders on the unnatural.
She must know Adrian's secrets! But each step that draws the inquisitive beauty deeper into his shadowy world pulls her closer to a sensuous surrender, for the power of his passion is impossible to resist. Is he man or monster, champion or villian? And will a yearning heart lead Caroline to dasaster...or to love?

Caroline Cabot must meet the man who is courting her sister Vivienne, in London, but finds him dangerously irresistable. Is he really a vampire, as her little sister, Portia, insists? Interesting story line, with a few simple twists. An easy read.

Well, this book was really disappointing... The storyline sounds really promising from the back of the book:

The eldest and most sensible of the three Cabot siblings. Caroline is naturally concerned that her sister Vivienne has lately been keeping company with the infamous Adrian Kane, Viscount Trevalyan, the enigmatic nobleman whom most of the ton firmly believe is... a vampire!
Surely, it is nonsense. And yet...
The brooding gentleman inhabits a dark castle and is never seen in the daylight, embarking nightly on mysterious excursions to who knows where. And from the first moment Caroline encounters the handsome, hypnotically compelling viscount, she is shaken by a fevered desire for the man that border on the unnatural.
She must know Adrian's secrets! But each step that draws theinquisitive beauty deeper into the shadowy world pulls her closer to a sensuous surrender, for the power of his passion is impossible to resist. Is he man or monster, champion or villain? And will a yearning heart lead Caroline to disaster.... or to love?

But really I couldn't get past chapter four because the back ot he book throws us into the action and what is to come, and it sounds very modern and hip..... and actually reading it is another story. It is all prim and proper and no really involving scenes that I could see, and the charactes are not very relateable.
The book is just very hard to understand. And its not very likely I will read anything else in this series; I found four in this series. Its all just very BLAH.

Dracula and Northanger Abbey brought together into a historical romance novel. That was my impression throughout this book. To me, it was a tribute to the gothic novel, with the dark castle, complete with dungeon and mysterious hero, the great mystery to solve, vampires and a heroine who finds herself in the middle of all of it. It was quite an unusual book to read, very different from the traditional historical romances and different from most vampire books. I like that the heroine and the reader both find out the truth at the same time. The book keeps you guessing, is he a vampire, or isn't he? While the end does provide closure for most of the story, it nicely sets up what will be an intriguing story for their siblings. Overall, a great book I rate 4 stars. Can't wait to read the next one.

Not knowing this was about a vampire (I'm pretty sure) I began to read it. But withing a page or two, the fact that the romantic interest was considered a vampire by others turned me completely off! I hadn't realized this was something I couldn't read - but I guess it is. Maybe later I'll try again, but for now it was a no go.
