More Than Allies examines a circle of women who happen to be acquaintances of diverse backgrounds, loosely associated with either a neighborhood discussion group or with the local elementary school. Challenged by common problems such as childcare/discipline, money, and the need for a support network, these women eventually discover that they have more in common with one another than they at first thought. They cope with a range of issues that include belonging, legitimacy, opportunity, and the importance of family in their lives. This fourth novel by Scofield, who was nominated for a National Award for Beyond Deserving (Permanent Pr., 1992) should strike a chord in the hearts of women readers, to whom these issues are surely not new but nonetheless universal.
