One of her better ones, filler with plot twists and turns up to the very last page. It is a WOW, OH MY GOSH!!! Starting with an abduction of a 12 year old girl 25 years ago.....Read this one and you will be hooked as I am on this author.

"Alone" reads like a television miniseries and if you're after suspense, action and some psychological twists, this is the novel for you.

The character development of Bobby is excellent, and the storyline was pretty good. However, the last 50 pages seemed a bit rushed. It was disappointing that this book was missing Gardner's usual romantic component. However, the story was good, and the characters were complex and compelling, and I hope to see Bobby in another of her books. Overall it's a good read.

This was phenomenal....it keeps you guessing right up to the end, and even then, you're left wondering if what you think happened really did. Very suspenseful, and focuses primarily on the male protagonist.

Gardner reveals a "behind-the-scenes", in-depth look at how a hostage situation can play out from a sniper's perspective. State Trooper Bobby Dodge's life will forever be changed after a split-second decision to pull the trigger. Even after years of training, he is not prepared for the consequences of that decision and the aftermath that unfolds.
Intense drama and suspense....I highly recommend this book.

Another very good one by Lisa Gardner. I found this to be a riveting read that kept you guessing until the bitter end. The main focus is the emotional torment of Bobby Dodge, a police sniper as he wrestles with the ramifications, legally and personally of doing his job. DD Warren has a small supporting role in this book as an investigator of the main case.

First time I've read anything by Gardner, and I have to admit that she is a good writer who has a way with twisty, tricky plots. Every time I thought I had something figured out, the next paragraph proved me wrong, and that kept me interested. But Warren and Dodge didn't have much appeal for me--Warren was mostly a bit player in this story, no more than a stereotypical detective, and Dodge just didn't ring true somehow. It's my lack of connection with the characters that will probably make me decide not to go further with the series.

Great psychological thriller! A SWAT officer on scene kills an abusive husband who is ready to shoot his wife, who's holding their four year old son. Now the dead man's parents are suing him, claiming he murdered their son, and that the wife, who was abducted by a pedophile as a young girl and still has 'issues', was abusing the child. With his world turned upside down, and secrets of his own, Officer Dodge needs answers and absolution, as killing in the line of duty isn't as justifyable as he'd imagined.

Thought this was a little different for a Gardner. No romance, just very good suspense. A police sniper shoots a man he thinks is about to shoot a hostage. Hostage is the man's wife and the man is the son of a prominent judge. Was the shooting justified, or was it murder?

Are all mystery books this good? Have I really been missing out? Nah, I don't believe it. This isn't a genre I normally read. I stay away from all books by those 'everyone-knows-best-selling-authors' for the most part. (I read them when I was younger, got bored with them, etc.)
So, I won 'Live to Tell' from FirstReads and was flabbergasted by how well it was written. The suspense, the characters, the whole nine, I had found a new author. (As if that was needed.) Soooo, I went ahead and started getting the previous books in the series before 'Save Me (Detective D.D. Warren, #5)' hit the shelves. Then time got in the way, blah, blah, blah and I'm just now getting to them. (I read 'Live to Tell', the 4th book in the D.D. Warren series first, a few months before it came out.)
I wasn't even worried that the first books wouldn't grab me. 'Live to Tell' took such a hold that I just knew her writing would probably always pull me in.
And this was no different. I don't remember many books, if any, where the suspense literally makes my heart beat faster. Lots of books claim it but hardly any deliver IMO. Well, this one delivers and more.
'Alone' is much more about Officer Bobby Dodge than D.D. but it doesn't even matter. D.D. shows up for a few small parts and I'm not sure how she's going to tie in because in the 4th she was the main character.
Catherine's character - I don't even know what to say. The only other character I could think of that comes to mind when I think of Catherine is Lisette in Dwayne S. Joseph's 'Home Wrecker' and 'Eye For An Eye' books. (If anyone has read either/both they'll immediately know how potent Catherine is.
I kept finding myself wondering how in the hell Gardner came up with this. Not so much the characters although that would certainly be one of my questions to her but how she came up with the plot. Honestly there are still a few small things I'm confused about. (This isn't the books fault, in any way, shape, or form. If it can be blamed on anything it's my memory or lack thereof.)
I'd love a glimpse into the mind that can come up with something like this. Going to start the second now assuming I got the correct books which I'm not starting to doubt.

Lisa Gardner knows how to write a thriller that hooks the reader from the very beginning and this book is no exception.

Bobby is a state trooper, specializing as a sniper in a hostage response team. He responds to a call in which a husband is holding a gun to his wife and son. Bobby makes the deadly decision to shoot and his decision opens up a world of questions, lawsuits, and murder.

This book kept me riveted from page one. Gardner does a great job with creating mysterious characters that could all possibly be "the bad guy".

As a sniper with the elite Massachusetts State Police SWAT Team, Bobby Dakota has always enjoyed a good hunt. Until one November night when he saves a woman and her young son by shooting her armed husband. Bobby did what he was trained to do, he did it well, and he's not losing any sleep over it. But vicious rumors are already circulating the next morning when Boby loses his gun and his privileges. Because the dead man was the son of a prominent Boston judge and had accused his wife of poisoning their son. Facing awkward stares and a crippling wrongful death lawsuit, Bobby begins his own investigation into the fateful shooting--and a fight to reclaim the life he holds dear. As the trail takes him into a twisted minefield of sordid wealth and family secrets, he is learning that nothing--and no one--is what they seem. Did Bobby Dakota take the right shot? Or was one of Boston's most elite law enforcement officers used as the perfect tool for murder? In a shocking thriller that will leave you gasping at every twist, Lisa Gardner once more raises the bar for crime fiction, proving why she is the master of suspense at its most intense!

One of the best Lisa Gardner books. State trooper Bobby Dodge is part of the sniper unit. A woman and her child are being attacked by the husband, should he shoot or not and what happens if he does.
reviewed Alone (Random House Large Print) on + 97 more book reviews
Bobby Dodge, member of the elite STOP team in Boston, MA, which deals with dangerous police situations, has just completed a grim task: as a sniper he has ended the life of a husband Jimmy Gagnon, who seemingly was on the verge of harming either his wife Catherine or his son Nathan. And to add to Bobby's distress at having to kill another man, he is immediately attacked by Jimmy's father, Judge James Gagnon, a powerful Boston personage, for acting rashly and caving in to the manipulations of Catherine.

But what is it about the past of Bobby, Catherine, and Jimmy, and even the Judge, that has led to this point? Lisa Gardner expertly combines the unfolding of traumatic disturbances in their lives with rapid fire developments in the present. Given her history, could Catherine, one with elegant, fragile beauty, orchestrate her own husband's death? Maybe Bobby knew more about the Gagnon's then he is telling - are his actions completely innocent? Why is the Judge's and his wife's past shrouded in mystery?

This is Lisa Gardner's best book, and most of her previous books were quite good. The plot is great and it moves. Yet the characters get the right amount of attention. And there are some nice twists. This latest effort by Gardner will disappoint few.

This is an abridged audiobook, which might explain the fact that Bobby Dodge's behavior is not just dubious, but truly unprofessional. Getting past that was kind of a hurdle, but it is only 4 disks, so you get to the conclusion finally. D.D. Warren, from another series, makes a cameo appearance as one of several of the people who should have been helping the lead character but was negative and aggressive.

This was my first Lisa Gardner book. I have an other, which I hope redeems her writing. It's unabridged, which might make a difference...

He survived solitary confinement in a maximum security prison. Now he walks the streets a free man, filled with a twisted rage for vengeance.

Story had suspense from page one, all the way through. Couldn't put it down because I HAD to know what was going to happen next. Ending could have been a bit more drawn-out, but it too had a good level of suspense.

I just finished this book - very intense. I could barely keep up. It really moves along and I can't say I relate with any of the characters. I found them very credible but they move in a world that is completely foreign to me. Now that I'm done I don't feel that I know or understand the characters and what made them act/react in a certain way. I am left with the feeling that I missed something and I'm unsure if that is just me or if perhaps that is the way Lisa Gardner meant it to be. At any rate, while I enjoyed the book, I wish I could have formed a connection with at least one of the characters.

This is an exciting mystery in a series about a state trooper, Bobby Dodge, who is a sniper. He is called to check out a domestic violence situation and his life becomes chaos after that. I am on the second in the series, "Hide", and it just gets better.

Another hold your breath mystery. Or shall I say, "Don't open that door!". Good vs Evil and "No good deed goes unpunished". Worth the listen with an excellent actor doing the storytelling. Why Why Why I would think doesn't he just foget-about-it? Nice pageturner... or shall I say disk changer.
