Previous to approaching the history of the disease which appeared within the circle of my practice, and the treatment I pursue, I conceive it necessary to make a few remarks on the local situation of the country, the seasons, and the state of health of the inhabitants, for some months preceding the appearance of what is called efiidemic; but what (as will be seen in the sequel) I only consider a form of our xstal and autumnal endemic, so highly aggravated as to assume noveltiet and /tcculiaritics of character, which would seem to entitle it to the former appellation. Surry county is bounded on the north by James River ; on the vest in part by a creek flowing into the James, called the Upper Chipoax, and partly by a line dividing it from the county of Prince George; on the south it is bounded principally by Black-water Swamfl, a considerable stream, but in part by a line dividing it from the county of Sussex ; and on the east by Soynes Creek, flowing into James River, and in a line dividing it from the county of Isle of Wight. In the northern section of the county, immediately on the river, the land is quite elevated and very much broken ; the banks of the James being generally, but more particularly in the upper half or three-fourths of the county, very high, and intersected with numerous deep and extensive ravines.
