In early 2000 Denby, then and now a respected film critic for The New Yorker, wanted to raise the money to buy out his departing wife’s share of their roomy Manhattan apartment. With her permission, he began to invest in tech stocks. In the next couple of years, he lost about a million dollars as the dot-com industry went kaput. It’s a mildly interesting story about middle-aged angst leading to less than ideal decision-making. Though shallow discussing sin, he touches on the insatiability of wanting more money, stuff, and prestige. It was Denby’s intention to write a book about his investing adventure. So he was able to get access to big players such as ImClone Systems mogul Sam Waksal, influential Merrill Lynch Internet analyst Henry Blodget, and former Clinton economic heavyweight Arthur Levitt.
