Ready for an adventure? This book will take you on one! It certainly did me. Angels & Demons was the first Dan Brown novel that I read and I was captivated from the first sentence to the last word. This is a riveting thriller that is action-packed with suspense, murder, and mayhem that threatens to erupt on the eve of the new pope's coronation. Plus, it is filled with factual information regarding historical landmarks and the Catholic Church, while intertwining science and religion. I highly recommend putting this book on your "must-read" list!

Really well-written. The historical facts are very accurate but it does not have to shake anyone's religious convictions.... it is just an excellent read.

I had a love/hate relationship with this book. It is fast paced and interesting and kept me going. Brown's style is easy to read and kept my attention from wandering. On the negative side, I found some of the 'twists' to be a little simple, despite insistence from the author that they were important. These moments, while not incredibly numerous, still had me groaning from time to time. Overall, I would still say it's a good read for a rainy day

This book is great if you love a good suspense book, this book is hard to put down at least it was for me. Better then the movie. Murder, good story telling, Dan brown is great at twisting the facts and making them work for his book, there is just enough truth in this book to be dangerous, (Ok I didn't say that but it is the truth.)

ANGELS & DEMONS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS.
A pulse-pounding, edge-of-your-seat thriller. ANGELS & DEMONS is as compelling as Umberto Eco... as engaging as Tom Clancy... as fast-paced as Michael Crichton... and rivals the best Thomas Harris thriller. Angels & Demons earns Dan Brown a place among these literary peers.

I really liked the Da Vinci Code, so I thought another Dan Brown book with Robert Langdon was a must to read. Dan Brown does a fairly good job at weaving fiction in the historical setting of Rome and the Vatican. The whole story takes place in less than 24 hours. Science at odds with religion with the Illuminati at the center of the mystery. Robert Langdon portrays the Harvard symbologist with almost superhero powers. He manages to evade death time and time again. I do think jumping out of a helicopter without a parachute and using only a tarp to break the fall was a bit far fetched. A stimulating fun long book (almost 700 pages)which is perfect for a long plane ride.

It took me about 75 pages to really get into this book, but once I did, I finished it in two days. That's really fast for me! I sometimes don't have the longest attention span when it comes to reading (haha!), but I sat and read this book for four straight hours and then only put it down because I had somewhere else to be. I've always been intrigued by books and movies that deal with secret societies and I loved reading about art and architecture, Rome, and the Vatican in addition. Truly a suspenseful story with lots of twists. Great book!

I really enjoyed this book for many reasons:

* References to symbology, art and architecture are very informative and interesting - and because I love all three, this made it even more enjoyable for me. I'm sure I am not the first nor last person who, after reading about the main character, Robert Langdon, thinks a degree in symbology would be THE most interesting thing ever! I wish I could just take a class on the topic. If you are a lover of art history, architecture and/or find the history of symbology interesting - that alone will sustain your interest throughout the book.

* I will admit that at times the reader is required to suspend disbelief, however, I feel Dan Brown incorporates an astounding level of factual information in his books and really does his reasearch. I came away feeling as though I accomplished two things 1) enjoyed a great book and 2)learned something new and interesting;

* Being Catholic, I gave into my need/desire to research information in both this and the DaVinci Code. While the book had no effect on my faith either way, I will admit I do feel I learned a lot about the Catholic Church and other organizations after reading Brown's books. It really goes the extra mile and prompts the reader to think and possibly, like myself, research information for themselves. I also feel that the fact that I am Catholic made the book a lot easier for me to understand as I know many of my friends who are non-Catholic are mystified by the Church at times. It was very easy for me to relate to the characters and plot in the book because of my knowledge and experience.

* The book is a real page-turner. I had a hard time putting it down and lost serious sleep while reading this book. I have read most, if not all, of Brown's books and cannot wait for the next!

* The book was made into a movie and because I usually always read the books first, knew where inconsistencies popped up in the movie. While unavoidable I will admit I was just a little disappointed in some of the deviations the movie made from the book. I enjoyed the book a lot more than the movie.

If you liked DaVinci Code and/or Dan Brown, you will most likely enjoy this book. I highly recommend it and personally have added it to my list of books I am planning to re-read at some point in time.

I am a fan of Illuminati references, so when I saw coming attractions for "Angels & Demons", the movie, I couldn't wait to watch it. But the release date seemed too far off.

Instead, I popped down to my local Goodwill and, as if by divine decree, this book was sitting there just waiting to be taken home and read. Who was I not to oblige?

The book was fantastic. Whoever was commissioned to do the artwork inside the book was inspired. And the ending? The surprises just keep coming. Robert Langdon's character is quirky, nuanced, and well developed, as is that of his female scientist sidekick.

If you have the credit, do not pass up the opportunity to read this book!

I've read all four Dan Brown books, and this was my favorite. If you liked "The Da Vinci Code", this book, the prequel, was a hundred times better.

Fast-paced and set in Rome, you get a lesson in Roman and Vatican history - I'm sure I'm not the only one who wished she had a pass into the Vatican library after reading this - and you'll be kept on the edge of your seat to boot. The secret society featured in this novel is The Illuminati - an ancient society dedicated to taking down the Catholic Church. High-ranking Catholic priests being publicly murdered in increasingly horrific ways, all branded with mysterious symbols. Can Langdon stop the Illuminati and save the Vatican?

I love a page-turning mystery thriller, which is exactly what Angels & Demons is. But after The DaVinci Code, it just seemed formulaic. Take more-or-less the same characters, give them different names and professions, thrown in a different conspiracy theory history and you've got a new novel.

If you like Dan Brown that is a plus when reading this book, because he writes the same as in the 'The DaVinci Code', I felt like I was reading the 'The DaVinci Code' all over again except it had different characters and the plot was different, the tone, the ambience all the same, not much different, just a copycat version but the names have been changed. Wish they could have found someone else besides Mr. Hanks to be the main character in both movies. He doesn't fit the character. They needed someone younger, as much as I find Hanks a good actor, this is one time he's not.

I like Dan Brown, and Angels & Demons didn't disappoint, the story is immersible and entertaining. I really didn't want to put it down. I don't want to spoil anything, so no comment about the ending, you just have to read it to believe it. Even so, I couldn't put this book down. Da Vinci Code is better but these two books are in the same league as they are highly entertaining. I can see past the religion and see the book for what it is - entertainment. It isn't a personal vendetta against the Roman Catholic church, nor is it blasphemous or trying to change the history of mankind. It's just an adrenaline-pumping, page-turning suspence novel. A work of fiction.

You need to suspend your belief system a bit for this book. It holds your attention and is a quick read for a commitment of almost 600 pages. I did not see the plot twists coming until the very end for this book. The "villain" or hassassin (as Mr Brown calls him) has no character development. He just likes to kill people but the basis of that nasty personality trait is not explored. As long as people realize that this is a fictional work, it is entertaining. I'm uncertain why the Vatican is so polarized by this work other than the fact that Dan Brown wrote it.

"Angels & Demons" is an excellent book. I have always been interested in the tales of the Illuminati, and I am familiar with some of their history. This made the book a bit more enjoyable for me.

Dan Brown is a very good storyteller. He had me enthralled to the very end (I actually read this book in 3-days).

I will be honest, though I won't ruin the book for anyone, there is one minor flaw with the story, which you will have to figure out on your own by reading the book. You will enjoy the book, though, while trying to figure out the flaw.

Enjoy!

This book was the source of extensive controversy over the past few years. If you take on and of Dan Brown's writing, be prepared, it contains some content which may be offensive to Christian, specifically Catholics. I (a Catholic) enjoyed this book tremendously for it's fast-paced, culturally rich plotline. Just when you think you've figured out Dan Brown he throws in another twist, and I can't resist buying his books. If you're afraid the content might offend you, just remember it's fiction, and keep turning the pages for a fascinating mystery you won't soon forget.

I read Angels & Demons looking for clarity from watching the movie. I am easily confused when there are many characters involved in a plot that takes place in a short amount of time. After I read the book, I realized the movie had a different ending so I was still a little confused. However, the book was a definite page turner, keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout. I got lost in some of the scientific arguments, but understood most of the religious comments because of my past as a Catholic. The book was a great read, but certainly not as good as I was told it would be.

I first got swept up in the Dan Brown craze when The DaVinci Code hit the big time. I was drawn into that story and didn't realize the gaping holes in Mr. Brown's writing until I read this book. The story is as interesting as The DaVinci Code, but there are far more disappointing liberties that he takes with this story. The final pages of this book left me so disenchanted with Dan Brown, I tried to swear off his books, but picked up The Lost Symbol, which surpassed even this one in literary malfeasance.

This is probably the best of the Langdon novels. The plot is pretty tightly constructed, it takes off fast and never lets up. Great twist at the end. If you like any of Brown's other novels, you'll like this one. I have difficulty getting past certain of his flaws as a writer, but if you can just relax and enjoy it, it's a good suspense/mystery.

Dan Brown's prequel to the Da Vinci Code started out promising to me. It combined the ancient brotherhood of the Illuminati, modern and ancient Catholicism, CERN (A European organization for Nuclear Science), and the moral implications of science as a whole in one book. Being raised in a family of devout Catholics it had much appeal for me.

The great thing about the book is that it gets right to the point on the first page when you read the prologue. A Physicist/Priest named Leonardo Vetra is murdered in his home inside CERN's research facility located in Geneva. When a suspicious brand proclaiming the word Illuminati is found on on the body's chest our unassuming hero Robert Langdon enters the picture. Langdon is a Harvard professor of Religious Iconology and is called in by CERN's director general Maximilian Kohler. Kohler is introduced as a physically frail man with an awe/fear inspiring ironclad rule over the entire facility. As the author introduces us to the Physics aspect of the book which is important considering the obstacle our main characters it gets a little dry and I found myself wanting to skip it but decided not to because I thought it was probably important.

Langdon does a great job of giving us an "Illuminati for Dummies" lesson however so we knew just a few pages in exactly who we as the reader are dealing with. This is important because the fanatical man we know only as the Hassassin committing these murders has been hired by the Illuminati (The Illuminati being one man calling himself "Janus" in the modern representation of the brotherhood.) to remove Vetra as a threat to the society because he proved the Big Bang Theory to be possible thus plausibly leading people to religion again.

We meet up with Vittoria Vetra, Leonardo Vetra's adopted daughter and fellow scientist, right about the time Langdon has been given his tour of the facility and has seen Vetra's body. She comes off at first as a grieving daughter, but as a character I found her slightly annoying in the beginning only because the author's emphasis on how sexy she was took away the seriousness that the character's father was murdered, had his eye cut out, and been branded across his chest. The gravity of the situation should have taken precedence over the way she walked and how her hair smelled. We were supposed to be left in horror at this point and wanting to find answers. She does redeem herself later in the book though and I did find myself liking her after my initial reaction.

When Vittoria leads Langdon and Kohler through her father's laboratory, we find that a canister of antimatter has been stolen which holds enough power to level Vatican City and some surrounding areas of Rome. Time is ticking down as the canister only has 24 hours of battery life before the antimatter loses it's magnetic field holding it in place inside of the canister before it drops causing the explosion. A call comes in that locates the missing antimatter somewhere inside Vatican City where Il Conclave is about to begin, the Catholic Church's ritual for the election of a Pope that takes place 15 days after the previous one dies. With the antimatter located (somewhat, we still have to find the canister itself inside of Vatican City) our now unassuming heroes Langdon and Vittoria are on their way to Italy.

The last main character of the book Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca was now introduced to us. The camerlengo is a position inside the Catholic church appointed to the personal servant to the previous Pope to reside over the office until the conclave of cardinals is finished and a new one is elected. Immediately he comes of as a refreshing breath of air given all Langdon and Vittoria has went through simply in the acts of reaching the office of the Pope.

As the storyline progresses from here, you sometimes wonder if Langdon is Superman or just a Harvard Professor. Several superhuman feats on spur in of the moment situations with no military or survivalist training makes you do sort of an eye roll from time to time but the book redeems itself simply from the fascinating story it tells based on facts of history. Brown was well informed and the realistic quality (besides the aforementioned) was there. It provides a history lesson with a twist.

The ending though surprising, left me disappointed. I have to admit I was rooting both as a former Catholic and a reader for poor old Carlo. The thought of a young and sympathetic Pope even had me cheering for the church a bit after the sometimes harsh but true representation of them in the book.

Without giving the ending away and ruining it for the reader I can not say more in this review but all in all, if you take it for the fascinating history, science, and Catholicism lesson that it is with the few very minor flaws the characters have, it's a wonderful read and at 600+ pages it's a great way to spend a rainy weekend.

By far Dan Brown's best work (that I've read, anyway.) This is everything a historical thriller should be: fast-paced, suspenseful, and leaving you hanging at every turn, and yet smart and interesting as well. The book manages to strike that perfect balance between thrilling adventure and thought-provoking issues that Dan Brown has never quite managed to duplicate since. There's a lot of information, and yet it all fits with what's going on. Everything in the novel is very tight. Similarly, the central issue of faith versus reason is presented in a very balanced way, not leaning too much on either side and showing the good and the bad of both ways of thinking. You'll be amazed at how quickly you read this book, the story moves so quickly. It's maybe not the world's greatest book, but it's definitely a great read.

Robert Langdon is awakened by an early morning phone call and by days end is involved in tracking down stolen anti-matter, solving a centuries old mystery, and foiling a plot to destroy the Catholic church and the Vatican. If this sounds like the latest cinematic techno-thriller, it is. Dan Brown has created a bookish hero/anti-hero to rival Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan.

The action is pretty much non-stop and the many short chapters feel like cut scenes in a well scripted movie. The writing is fast paced, intelligent and draws you in. This novel is a roller coaster for the mind and yet, like a roller coaster, at its highest points you see the surrounding world from a fresh perspective. The theological questions and the historical give one food for thought while the ongoing story sweeps you along on an adrenalin high.

This is a fast, fun, facile read. Enjoy.

Faster paced and more action packed than Da Vinci Code. Dan Brown's intricate and intimate descriptions transport the listener into the action and establish a very high benchmark for when this Robert Langdon "prequel" makes it to film. Like Da Vinci Code, listeners knowledgeable about Church history will need to overlook minor innacuracies, but with the level of action now approaching that of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series or even some early James Bond storylines, that is not much to ask. The book has been abridged so well for this audiotape series that it is difficult to tell anything has been removed.

The first book by Dan Brown featuring the character of Robert Langdon, a Harvard symbologist. Like many, I read "The Da Vinci Code", this book's successor, before "Angels & Demons", but that in no way hampered my enjoyment of this fast-paced, suspenseful, and intriguing book. There are many, many similarities with "Angels & Demons" and "The Da Vinci Code", namely concerning plot order (both books start with a mysterious murder which catapults Robert into an adventure involving the Catholic Church), motivations (each book concerns an organization trying to do something against the Catholic Church's wishes and/or knowledge), and certain characters (Langdon, of course, along with a female intellectual sidekick, police officers and chiefs, and mysterious assassins). Don't be fooled, though, into thinking this is merely "The Da Vinci Code 2". This book is in some ways much more suspenseful and urgent in pace than "The Da Vinci Code", and is far less controversial through much of the text. The plot driver concerning the Illumaniti brotherhood and their supposed reemergence to once-and-for-all destroy the Church is very interesting. Readers will also find the same delightful tidbits of history, symbolism, art, and architecture as in "The Da Vinci Code", especially because this edition of the book holds many photographs, drawings, and other such miscellanea of the many locations, people, and symbols it describes. A highly recommended read!

Robert Langdon is a Harvard professor of symbology and a world-renowned expert on the subject. His quiet life is turned upside down when he receives a fax with the symbol of the Illuminati branded on a murdered man's chest and an insistent summons to help with the investigation.

I enjoyed this book tremendously for the adventure, the history, the quick pace and the light romance. I literally couldn't put it down and stayed up into the wee hours of the morning reading because I had to find out who Janus was, what it is he was after and where the secret Illuminati lair was.
It was interesting to see the conflict between good and evil in this story and Mr. Brown's interpretation of it. You can't get away from it - it's in the title itself. It was fascinating to see how the same things could be perceived to be on the opposite ends of the spectrum depending on the viewpoint of the examiner: are science, knowledge, education and progress good or are they to be shunned in favor of almost blind faith? Is murder justified if it's a means to a righteous end? Can goodness become evil if it goes untempered?
I couldn't help but grow fond of Robert, Vittoria and even the frosty Maximillian Kohler. They each have a story that makes them who they are and this humanity makes them all but walk off the page. For the same reason the villain is that much more chilling - I know there are people in this world who are at the same level of delusional conviction and will do anything to achieve their goals.
The academic explanations tended to slow down the pace but not enough to pull me out of the story. It was more like listening to a highly educated person carry on a conversation in which their field is involved - they just can't resist telling you all the different things they find fascinating and venture off into the realm of lecture before they catch themselves but when it's all said and done you still find that you're glad they told you all those things.
I would recommend this highly satisfying read to fans of edge-of-your-seat mystery with elements of history. Just be prepared to not sleep much until you turn that last page.

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the legendary secret society, the Illuminati--dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting the interests of science and condemning the blind faith of Catholicism--is alive, well, and murderously active. Brilliant physicist Leonardo Vetra has been murdered, his eyes plucked out, and the society's ancient symbol branded upon his chest. His final discovery, antimatter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared--only to be hidden somewhere beneath Vatican City on the eve of the election of a new pope. Langdon and Vittoria, Vetra's daughter and colleague, embark on a frantic hunt through the streets, churches, and catacombs of Rome, following a 400-year-old trail to the lair of the Illuminati, to prevent the incineration of civilization.

When world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyze a mysterious symbol -- seared into the chest of a murdered physicist -- he discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati... the most powerful underground organization ever to walk the earth.

The Illuminati has surfaced from the shadows to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy... the Catholic Church.

Langdon's worst fears are confirmed on the eve of the Vatican's holy conclave, when a messenger of the Illuminati announces he has hidden an unstoppable time bomb at the very heart of Vatican City. With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival.

Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair... a secret location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation.

An explosive international thriller, ANGELS & DEMONS careens from enlightening epiphanies to dark truths as the battle between science and religion turns to war...

I really liked this book! Another person told me that they wrote down all the sites listed in this book as part of a group assignment, and then she/they went to see them when she/they went to Italy. I'm going to re-read the book again one day, and do the same thing.

However, the book tells about an organization, CERN, in which, one of the scientists ventures upon a revealing fact, antimatter. Unfortunately, the antimatter is stolen and they think hidden somewhere in the Vatican. So the search is on to find the antimatter before it explodes.

from Amazon.com's review:
"It takes guts to write a novel that combines an ancient secret brotherhood, the Swiss Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, a papal conclave, mysterious ambigrams, a plot against the Vatican, a mad scientist in a wheelchair, particles of antimatter, jets that can travel 15,000 miles per hour, crafty assassins, a beautiful Italian physicist, and a Harvard professor of religious iconology. It takes talent to make that novel anything but ridiculous. Kudos to Dan Brown (Digital Fortress) for achieving the nearly impossible. Angels & Demons is a no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-the-stops, breathless tangle of a thriller"

Slow beginning; the first 100 pages made me seriously consider putting the book down and turning away. Brown's overuse of blatant foreshadowing ("Langley did not know that he would need this information three hours later to survive the night" etc.) is distracting and a terrible way to close each chapter. As the book progresses, the history and descriptions of different art works prove to be quite interesting, but the plot's rather predictable.

OK, the story, if not even a little bit believable, was reasonably entertaining. I don't demand believability!

However, the way this book is written is just unbelievably condescending. Brown feels the need to explain what the BBC is, what a particle accelerator is, insists on translating VERY basic foreign phrases, and gets basic word definitions in repeatedly under the guise of not having his characters know what things are. This wouldn't be so bad if the characters weren't supposed to be a physicist/biologist and a professor/symbologist. (A college professor has never HEARD of CERN?) The 'obscure' tidbits of knowledge that supposedly prove Langdon is brilliant in his field are most often common, pop-culture kinda stuff. He also divides "Christian vs. Pagan" symbology up in a way that people of centuries past did not. (It really would not have been considered shocking for a religious sculptor to also carve pyramids and obelisks, for example. And as of when is a dove a solely 'pagan' symbol?)

Luckily, most of the really irritating bits are in the beginning of the book - once people start dying, things get moving and the definitions fall by the wayside.
Still, I was hoping for a bit more... I didn't find the descriptions of life either at CERN or in the Vatican to be realistic AT ALL. (Oh, and as a library person, the bits dealing with when Langdon is allowed into the archives alone, without the help/supervision of a professional - sorry, but no way. They couldn't go wake up an archivist/librarian? And I don't believe that there is ANY evidence that the Vatican denies access to the materials in its catalog to non-Catholic researchers on the basis of their religion. From what I've read, it operates much like any other restricted archive - you have to have credentials as a qualified researcher, you need to request an appointment and the specific articles you want to see in advance, etc. Standard practice. And I really don't know about suffocating to death in an archival vault in 20 minutes. Unlikely. At least it's not something they ever warned us about in library school.)

I've been to Rome, and the book didn't succeed in bringing me back to the aura or feel of that beautiful and ancient yet modern city.
The religion vs. science debates brought up in the book are certainly timely, but fairly basic - they never really delve that deeply into the issues. Still, there are some really amusing bits, and some unexpected twists and turns in the plot.

Still, I should probably mention that it follows a very similar formula as the Da Vinci Code - if you've read one recently, the other may seem sneakingly familiar....

Overall my reaction is "eh, so it goes". The book seemed to just follow the sleuth as he gets drug around rather than him actually being an active involvement. Look, here's a symbol. Look, here's a body. Look, look, here's a great big pointer! The red herring was reasonably well done (though overdone a bit, as well. I like having things stacked against the wrong character, I don't like having them so shoved at me and the real bad guys hidden quite so well--the point it bothered me was the actions of some of the guards), and I didn't figure out who the bad guy was until late. On the other hand, the hero basically had to have the bad guy handed to him before he figured it out either.

I know it isn't a mystery, it's a thriller, but I still felt the story took place in spite of the main character, which made it harder to be drawn in. He needs more active involvement and less "Oh! Look! I will solve a generations old mystery! In five minutes despite working on it for years!"

Not bad, not great. I also didn't really like the ending with the female lead after looking at the description of The Da Vinci Code and finding it has a different female lead. Not that I'm surprised, but I find it unneeded and irrelevant to the story.

Does Dan Brown need introducting? Despite the high acclaim for this and other books, I found it lacking. The ending does not fit the rest of the book - as though he wrote the first 4/5, left it for some time, and then finished the book, giving some key actors different personalities, making the ending all but impossible.

Rest of the book is great - he's a pretty good fiction writer.

I couldn't put this down. I had to hide the book so that my research thesis for college would get done. I beleive this is the first ins type of series by the writer of the Davinci Code. One of the best books I have read in a long time.

World renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to a Swiss research facility to analyze a cryptic symbol seared intot he chest of a murdered physicist. What he discovers is unimaginable: a deadly vendetta agaisnt the Catholic Church by a centuries-old underground organization--the Illuminati. Desperat to save the Vatican from a powerful time bomb, Langdon joins forces in Rome with the beautiful and mysterious scientist Vittoria Vetra. Together they embark on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and the most secretive vault on earth...the Illuminati lair.

Another best selling author, Nelson DeMille, wrote that Dan Brown has to be one of the best, smartest, and most accomplished writers in the country.

You've often heard the recommendation that if you liked one certain thing then you'll like another thing? I've found that statement is seldom true and usually only means that the speaker liked both. But in this case I feel I feel confident in saying "If you liked 'The DaVinci Code' you'll like 'Angels and Demons'.

I liked this book much more than I liked Dan Browns much more popular DaVinci Code. This story is very similar. It's a page turning light read, the first time that Robrt Langdon finds himself caught up in mistery. There are detailed descriptions of death and deals with an underground Catholic Church group, which may turn off some readers.
