Terrific writting by Michael Phillips... This was a quick read... I have already started into the second of the series... Two young girls from different world come together after the civil war... Both of their families have been killed... they learn to take care of eachother become best of friends, a trust in God to bring them through many challenges...dg

One of the most interesting and beautiful series i have read, and i have read alot of them. Each book really will stand alone, but it is so nice to start this series from the beginning, since this is number 1. It is a very touching story and i felt as if i were on the plantation and cotton was growing in the far field and jam and biscuits were warm and dripping in the mornings and that Southern breeze i loved so well when i was in the south is such a beautiful way to end the day. Times were expected to be hard but there is also so much faith and love in this series. It will make you wake up and FEEL this era.

Shortly after the Civil War, Mayme, a slave girl, witnesses the murder of her family. She wanders to a plantation several miles away to discover Katie, the only survivor of a massacre at her home. Together they start to put their lives as back to normal as they can. Mayme teaches Katie how to chop wood, milk cows, and shoot a gun. Katie teaches Mayme about Mozart, the minuet, and how to read. Katie convinces Mayme to stay, and share her home in spite of the differences in their background, while keeping the secret that they are all alone, and left to fend for themselves. This is the first book of a series of four. You do have to read them all to find out what happens. I love the message this book conveys, that anyone can become family.

If you like to read about the Civil War period of time, this book (and the series) is for you. It follows a young orphaned girl and one of the slave girls as they try to cope with what is happening around them. I loved the storyline and the historical nuggets seeded throughout.

Very deep and touching recount of girls stranded on the plantation with only each other to depend on and don't forget their childlike faith in God.

Two girls from two different worlds Can they survive in a world suddenly turned upside down? A story as full of emotion and drama as the characters themselves.

This touching story about the bad state of the South after the war, was sad. The courage of the slave girl helping the plantation owners daughter was the core of the book. Thank goodness she found her Mama's Bible, which gave her strength to learn to read better.
Michael Phillips knows how to write about the Civil War, he has real insight. Can't wait to read what happens next.

Several years ago, I read a book by Michael Phillips that I had difficult time getting through. Because of this, I have not read anything else by this author until now...Boy, have I been missing some great reads!

Angels Watching Over Me kept me absorbed from the first page. I love Miss Katie and Mayme. I'm having a difficult time waiting to read the sequel, A Day To Pick Your Own Cotton.
