The plot is that a big music star recorded a song where he mentioned by name a girl from his high school years.  She is a librarian or teacher in a small town and it causes quite a scandal.  I think it even risked her job.  One of her best friends works at the museum in the singer's childhood home.  It was a library book years ago.  I know I read Due East around the same time.  And I know that Lifetime made a horrid movie of the book.

Any leads?

No.  In this book they were not high school sweethearts.  Close, but not.  Argh.  Even went back to that library trying to figure it out.  And the hardcover dust jacket had a design looking like a pack of cigarettes as the song mentioned her brand, so folks in town knew it was about her and not just random.

Bobby Rex's Greatest Hit by Marianne Gingher.  The movie was Just My Imagination with Jean Smart.  (I remember the book being MUCH better than the movie.)  Saw Jean Smart in something and traced it backwards.
