Just got offered a WL book a few days ago and it will expire today if poster doesn't accept my request.  This is a book my daughter was really looking forward to as it is part of a series she started.  WHY DO FOLKS POST A WL BOOK THEN IGNORE AN IMMEDIATE REQUEST?

I know how you feel.  I've read everyone's reasons excusing this and I know occasionally life interrupts our plans, but things like this seem to happen more often than would be logical.  I know , for myself, that I time posting wish list books very carefully to make sure I will be able to accept a request and mail on time.  New people may not understand that a book that has wishers will be requested immediately, but after you've been here awhile you should have figured out that you need to check for wishers before posting.  I hope that, one way or another, your daughter will soon be able to enjoy this book.

Keep in mind that you may not be the first person to be offered the book.  The member may have posted it days ago and the first (and possibly second) people in the WL queue may have let it time out.  From your perspective, it's an immediate request, but it's very possible it isn't for them.

Valerie is right...it very well may have rolled thru inactive members before coming to you. I have found myself in that situation more than once, and it's as frustrating to post a WL book and watch it not be able to find someone who actually wants it as it is to have a WL book posted to you and then the posting member doesn't mail it in time. I had one member cancel my WL request with a PM that basically said that the book had rolled thru so many members before it got to me, that she'd gotten disgusted and donated the book in the meantime...heartbreaking news to someone who had wished for the book for years.

This. I have posted WL books and watched them go 8 days before finally being accepted. This is (a) why I much prefer to post WL books to friends if possible, and (b) why PBS should really consider doing something to clean out inactive accounts. A simple email saying something to the effect of "Hey, we noticed it's been 3 months since you've logged in...if you would like your membership to remain active, please log in within the next 10 days. If you do not log in by midnight 10 days after receipt of this email, your account will be suspended." I rarely log into SACD, but my CDs are still available for trade. It would be NBD to get an email like this and go log in, just to keep the account active.

I'm beginning to wonder if this club is going to survive. Here we are mid day and the members on line is 690. I can remember when it was over twice that number at mid day.

I posted a wl book a while ago. There were 18 wishers for the book. It was finally requested when it got down to 13. And only 1 person cancelled immediately. The others went the full two days and rolled over.

I hope PBS survives but it is clear it will be a much less active and vibrant trading venue. Sadly, I do not believe the decline has anything to do with the modest monies involved but with the implementation of the change followed by the failures to address issues such as incactive accounts, directed deliveries, the numerous bypasses of fifo, "member" access to boards. All poor choices and people have voted with their feet. Seems like the Titanic, use the credits paid for via  prior postage costs and get out or go alacarte.

But this is not a DVD site - it is a book site?

<<Actually membership does work for me, I have received many wl books. I think membership does work for some folks.>>

I have a membership and frankly, I wonder if during the membership change did I forget to flip a switch or something which stops me from receiving FIFO books?  I now go 1-2 months without being offered a book even though I'm number 1!  Before the membership change I was getting 2-3 a week.  I don't even play in games anymore because I no longer have books to offer, either in games or to post!

I don't have a full last year to compare to so my experiences may be different (plus where I live too..we have 1 used bookstore that is a true half off the cover price bookstore and the very few thrift shops sell books pretty high imo. 1.00 for p/b that they sell if it's stained, torn etc and h/c are 2.50 and up and again the conditions are bad so you skip it on some of them. I do get better books here than thrifts) I joined in June before the Feb. membership so I don't have a full year to compare too. When I joined I didn't get a wl book until a month later and then I noticed it's feast or famine. I'll get 3 offers in a week and then go a couple of monhs or more without an offer. I'm number one on the WL for about 25 books and some have been on my WL since I joined in June (but the last date posted was years ago so I don't have high hopes for those)

For me, it's been fine. I think membership does work for some. I have read where members say they get books so much cheaper and faster elsewhere but I don't have that so this works. Plus, I love the games and I can't get that anywhere else.

Mary, yes this is a book site.  I'm also a member of the sister sites SwapaDVD and SwapaCD.  Same deal with 48hr offer and auto-request on wl, except you rank your wl and earn points.  It always surprises when someone ranks high to be first in line but does not accept wl offers. When I'm second in line,  the offer they didn't accept got offered to me.  Happened to me a few times.  When get wl offer I check the DVD's posted today to find it.  If not listed I go  back about 48 hrs and find it posted, if I was #2 in line.

I have had 3 WL offers in the last 2 days and they were all thru FIFO. Before that it had been about a month without an WL books being granted to me.

I have been here nearly 9 years and while the popular opinion is that the club has declined since they implemented the membership charge in February, I don't agree with that. For the last 5 years I have seen a decline in the number of books posted every day, the number of members online at a given time and the number of threads in the forum. They have all been declining over that period, in my opinion due to the gaining popularity of e-books, the rise in the cost to mail a book and just good old fashioned attrition. Yes, the clumsy way "The Change" it was handled didn't help, but numbers were decreasing anyways. I do hope PBS is able to survive because for so many of us it has become a part of our lives, a hobby. I am still getting the same percentage of WL books that I have always gotten but what I do notice is that the odds of having to wish for a book rather than just request it is way up now. It is my fear that many are requesting books but not reposting books which is impacting the viability of PBS. So many members now have Wishlists but no books posted. In time that is going to start affecting everyone.

It would make me feel better about paying the next subscription if somebody in charge at the club would make a statement of their commitment to keep the club going at least for the next year. What worries me is having the club go out of business unexpectedly and with no warning.

My feeling is that the subscription fee was too big at the start. Something like 5 and 10 would have been better to start and then later it could have been raised.

In general I have come to enjoy the club. There are some annoying things about the way some of the members act but overall I like it. I am thinking of renewing at the 20$ level. The 30 swaps is too stressful for me.

I'm on here everyday so $20 a year is well worth my participation level. I used to spend at least $30 per month (up to $100 some months) in storefront chain bookstores so PBS has been a great savings to me.

so today is day 6 since I accepted the WL offer on the morning of the 29th.  It is still showing 'waiting for member' and it's the same poster as day one so it hasn't rolled over to another person who posted this WL book.

If the system is not working properly, seems you need to enlist the librarian's help to have the long ingnored requested book deleted from the poster's shelf. This should cause your #1 position to be kept and let the next posting be offered to you.

Jeanne, you accepted the wl offer on Nov 29 right?  The sender has five days to accept starting the next day.

So it's  Nov 30, Dec 1, Dec 2, Dec 3, Dec 4 (today).

If they do not accept today, the offer will expire tonight/morning at about 2:00- 3:00 am.

I had a wl offer expire and now it's on my transaction archive with a "Was Book Recieved"  button.  If it was never accepted I don't think they could  get my address.

Charles,

No need to stress over 30 swap limit. You can renew limited at any time and gain immediate access to the 30 free swaps. I just did it because I used the original 30.

thanks, Valerie, I figured since the time listed was in the morning the 29th counted as the first day. Yep, the offer expired so I'm back to #1 on WL.

Twice in October and once in November I had WL books offered to me that I was the only one wishing for. I usually don't get bothered when WL falls through because I've always been able to fall back on the usual rationalizations. It's more difficult when you know you're the only one wishing for a book and the poster backs out without explanation. I was just offered a book today that I'm the only one wishing for and I really hope that this one goes through. That being said, I have received many WL books since the membership fee went into effect and still feel the club works well for me.

I've seen that happen lately.  Someone will post one of my WL books, then it times out and the book goes back on my list.  Why are they posting books they have no intention of sending?  Maybe they should have to give a reason why they ignored the request, much as we do when we can't meet requestor conditions.  Just a thought.
