This question probably strikes horror and fear in everyone's heart, but a good friend of mine is planning to come over St. Patrick's weekend (I'm off that Monday & Tuesday) and she's going to help me go through all my books. I'm sure she'll take some even though she probably has more books than I do, but I'm so stoked that I can't wait. It's been a chore going through my books by myself so I'm really looking forward to this.

I haven't done any purging, but I have done quite a few big deals lately.

One thing I have noticed is that most of my orders lately are multiple orders.  I guess people are trying to save postage and order multiple books.  I think it is great that more people are doing this.  I know I appreciate it and try to do it when I order books from other people.

I don't think I'm going to post any that I get rid of to my Booksehelf  - I'm thinking donating to the local shelter or Goodwill, that sort of thing. In fact, I purged my Bookself - from 200+ books down to less that 30. As much as I love books and love to read, I can't take the boxes of them around the house any more. If I haven't read it in 5-10 years I doubt I'll be reading it now.

Umm, I just bought 33 books at a book sale on Sat. Is there group help for this sort of thing ;) I do try to only keep the books I really, really like and the rest get swapped. My TBR pile is huge but I can't imagine getting rid of it without reading them first.

In that case, yes.  I gave away a ton of books in December that were just bordering on being postable.  I can't give away perfectly good postable books :-)

I did a purge last spring when I joined PBS. The only stuff in my TBR now is stuff that I do plan to read. This coming spring I will be doing a purge from my PBS shelf, there are too many books on it! I want to get rid of some of the boxes, but its too cold in the garage to worry about it now!

I'm including freebies with every book I send out.  So the receiver gets an unexpected gift and I get a smaller shelf.

good idea, sherri! I could start doing that on a regular basis, too. I'll probably run a couple deals in the spring, too, in the bazaar.

That is a good idea Sherri.  I actually PM people that request one book and offer them a free additional book from my shelf.  I cannot believe how many times I have been turned down.  I have a fairly large shelf too.

Congratulations Gail! I do periodic small purges, usually when I decide I'm never going to want to read a particular author, but have not yet managed the *huge* purge I really need to do.

I usually do a purge once or twice a year. I go through and really consider whether these books still like something I'm interested in. I'm pretty good about getting rid of things I don't want anymore - my problem is a lot of my books are still wishlisted and I feel almost compelled to post them here, especially since I got most of them from here. But I really can't afford to send out huge groups of books. So even if I move the book from my tbr pile, it usually ends up in my 'post to PBS at some point' pile, which is fairly large as well. I need to just bite the bullet and donate them to a FOL sale or the Goodwill or something.

Jilian,

You could try seeing if anyone is interested in a group of books to save on postage.  I sent 6 books to one person today and it cost me $2.93.  I will get 6 credits for that.

I've been steadily purging. In fact, today I just posted my entire Mary Daheim set in an effort to make more room.

I'm thinking of doing a micro-mini purge of my PBS shelf and pulling off anything that is over a year old. I add to it regularly and have books go out regularly so those older books could just sit and sit and I'd never know.

I had bought a bunch of books online and offered my best friend the opportunity to get 6-7 books herself and then I purged my shelf of some books by sending her about 6 more that were from my personal shelf.

I've been running a special myself but not many order them as I have to re-update my book shelf

I've been purging or at least attempting to purge. I posted a bunch of books that my mother gave me that I will probably never read.  A couple of them were ordered.  I posted a bunch of books that I got really cheap at thrift store and after looking at them collecting dust for a long time-I posted them as well.  They were already ordered.  I went to the Baltimore Bookthing a few months ago-this is a big free book place in a really bad neighborhood-I got some cozies with a sodoku theme.  I found the first one really boring.  So I posted the other 2, which were WL and sent them out.  I also posted several books to my shelf that I haven't read yet.  A few are heavily posted into PBS so I figure they can work their way up FIFO.  THe others are available on PBS but not heavily posted.  If I get an order I'll just hold off a day or two on accepting and read the book.  I ready pretty quickly so I'm not worried about having to send one out unread.  Almost all of them are available at my library anyway.  Although I am holding off on rejoining BOB to avoid having more than 1 requested at once.  I also posted several books that I received in games and have no real interest in reading or had already read. In fact I have 2 books to mail this week from games. 1 was a book that was revealed to me and not stolen and I've already read it-it wasn't WL but it was ordered right away.  The other one was a book I have no interest at all in reading but I won it in a game. So I just posted it and it was also ordered right away.  My TBR is topping 500 and DH is complaining.  I have 3 bookshelves that are overflowing.

I"ve never let the lack of bookshelf space prevent me from acquiring a book I want.  As I finish reading a book I think I'll never want to reread, though, I'm putting in on the computer desk for relisting instead of letting it mix in with the ones I want to keep.  This could be called a mini-purge!

I need to again.  My ultimate goal is to get all my keeper books on my 3 bookshelves and be done with the boxes I have stored.  I need to get motivated to go thru stuff again because I know I have a lot of books I could post and get them off of my literal shelves and onto my PBS shelf.

I haven't exactly purged, but I did go through everything and post a lot of books to my shelf recently, and I've been sending out books pretty steadily since then.

Every once in awhile i go thru a major declutter phase. Just this past fall, i cleaned out about 50 books that i carefully looked thru and decided i was never going to read them all. I gave some away to friends and family, donated some to Goodwill and Freecycled the rest. Now i find myself filling up the empty storage tote all those books came out of! lol

A few times a year I go through my books.  I look to see what has been on my bookshelf here for a long time, books on my TBR that I've passed over for 10 times (and check the reminder list here to see if anyone is wanted) and then donate boxes of books to the library.  I recently went through my sons books, too.  Most of them are not in postable condition but still good enough reads so I donated several boxes of them to Goodwill.

Yes, occasionally, I'll wish I'd saved a book but that's what PBS is for!
