A friend of mine is trying to find the name of this book. It is about a boy who is tested to see what abilities he is goin to have, mage, bard etc.  It is found that his channels to these talents are all closed, he still stays at the school and bonds with his room mate, when this room mate is killed, all the channels to the talents is blasted open, almost causing him to go insane. He is then taken to a special mage to help him learn to cope with all his new talents. She is pretty sure this is a series.

Thanks so much for any help.

Sylvia

I haven't read that particular book, but I'm pretty sure it must be part of the Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey, which has the collegium for Heralds, Bards, and Healers.  There are about 30 books in the series, not counting short story anthologes (at least seven of those).  I have about 20 of the books, and it doesn't look like any of them, sorry.

that's Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey.  http://www.amazon.com/Magics-Pawn-Last-Herald-Mage-Book/dp/0886773520/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237361533&sr=1-1

it's the first in the Last Herald-Mage trilogy, and part of the larger Valdemar series.  and a *really* excellent book.
