Okay, I bought printable postage for 2 books.  Hooked up the printer,  it goes through all the screens, then it just doesn't print.  No error message, nothing.   So I go to the little box that tells me the pending print jobs, delete them, trying printing again.  Nothing.  I disconnected and reconnected all the cables.  Turner printer off,  let it have a little "me" time.  Turned it on again, deleted pending incidents, reprinted, still nothing.

I went to the trouble shooting page, it says printer is working.  Still shows pending print jobs.  Its a dell.

I was just wonding if any computer/printer savy peeps had any ideas what I should do now?  I paid for the postage for both books, so i would really like to be able to print it out   =(

Have you tried printing something else out?  Just open Word, type some gibberish and see if it will print.

Yeah, it gave me a test print on the troubleshooting, so I cleared out the print jobs, did the test print, then nothing happened.

I've found any time I delete printing jobs I have endless problems until I restart my computer. I don't know if it will help, but it can't hurt.

make sure you have the correct driver installed.  go to dell's site - downloads and down load the printer driver.  if it isn';t  a Postscript printer see the current driver.  If it is 6PCL then download 5e driver..... or if it is 5e download 6.   If you are using PS try PCL 5e or 6.

Does the computer know the printer is there? (Sounds like a new printer.)

Sometimes attaching a new printer requires drivers (software) to be installed, but this is usually done automatically. Perhaps a restart might help that process kick in.

Good luck.

this is kind of an obvious question, but do the print jobs show up in the folder for THAT printer? Or could they be going to a different printer. There's a good chance if your computer was not hooked up to this printer for a time, your default printer is set to something else and it will just sit in that folder.  When you print the pdf, make sure that you have the correct printer selected (and sometimes you may have more than one install of the same printer so look at your list of options).

I do this for  a living.  Be specific on the process.

1. when you print does it show up in the print job?
2.  What driver is installed on the printer  (universal, PCL6, PCL5e or postscript) - Make sure the drives are for your OS - Windows XP or is it Vista?
3.  Is it wired with USB?  change out your cable
4. I have a dell 1700 - make sure if there was an error you press continue.
5. Make sure there is paper in the bin (sorry - but you don't know how many times it has been paper)
6. Make sure there isn't any kind of paper jam.
7. Does the printer sound like it is printing?  If so - is there toner (again sorry -but I have to ask)
8. You said you couldn't print a test page?

the more specific you can be the more I can help.

Jubead, thanks!

It does absolutely nothing, there is no noise, it basically just shows the print job is pending.  I have printed with this computer on this printer before.

there is no error message.  =(

on #2 where do I find out what ddriver is installed?

The thing about it is, it has always worked in thepast.  But there is paper, ink is full, no error message, nothing.  Its like sometimes when you hit print and it takes about 10 seconds to start, so your waiting, but this time, nothing.

ETA-- Melanie, yes, they do show up as print job for the specific printer.   I checked that.  =(        its such a bummer because I have already paid for the postage, and I just dont have access to another printer right now, and one of my books has to go out today.  If I cant fix it by tonight I will send a pm.  But still....

Thanks for all the help!

Ok

XP - Start - printers -what do you have listed for printers?  Right click on the printer and select properties.  I think it is file ( I am going off the top of my head _ I am on vista) then see if the print job is paused?

Vista/Control Panel/(select clasic view) Printers - right click and see if printer is paused.

Is this a USB connection - try a different USB port on your computer.

Now check the conneciton

XP - follow steps below but click on the port tab

Vista - follow the above but right click on printer and select properties.  it will tell you if it is on the usb.

If it is USB see if anything else can be recognized on your usb port.

I am really not sure because the job said "deleting".  So I turned everything off and unhooked it.  Turned it on tried it again, didnt work.  Went to dell online and reinstalled software.  But now,  it only printed one of the pages and is back to doing the same thing.  sigh.

sounds like a driver issue-try uninstalling the driver and reinstall.  Doesn't dell have a diagnostic tool -it will help you figure it out.  also if the printer is new it is under warranty call...them.

To be honest the only reason I have a Dell Printer is that I purchased enough for a client that it was a gift.  I only buy HP for desktops and Canons for mass production.  I am behind dell desktops but not laptops or printers - they are flaky.  check to see if it pauses or if it is offline - but it really sounds like a driver issue.

I need to get a new printer.  The printer came with my dell pc, but I installed in on my laptop too.

Funny you should mention Dell computers.  I just bought a new Dell wireless computer with my new computer.  I haven't had any issues with it....knock on wood!

Sue - Dells are good computers - I really don't like to purchase their laptops for business (personal is different) - Business users beat them to death and the Dells don't hold up.  IBM Thinkpad used to be the way to go-but since Lenovo purchased it it has tanked.  I- So for business use and what I recommend to my friends - HP for Laptops and Dell for desktops.  HP printers are the only printer I recommend (I used to own an okidata and epson but the HP are work horses and will probably outlast me).  Canon's only for mass production /mulitifunction.   I have 6 HP printers that have lasted 9 years and are still going strong....just maintenance them reguarly.

Shannon - there shouldn't be any reason why it shouldn't work on the laptop.  If you ran windows update recently there may be a update that tanked the printer driver, the printer driver could become corrupt.  If it is an softare program for printing vs drivers (I hate the sw) then uninstall the software and then reinstall, restarting your computer after the uninstall.   If it is only a driver remove first -right click my computer/properties and then hardware tab - device manager.  Look printers and remove .  that is all I can do w/o remoting in to the computer and taking a look.
