I posted this question here and on abebooks sometime last year but had no luck, so I'm trying again.  I am trying to remember the title of a book I read years ago (literally over 20).  IIRC, the cover was red with gold lettering and it had a small ship on it in addition to the H/h.  It was a historical romance but not a series historical like Harlequin.  The story was similar to "Persuasion"---the girl is in love with this guy who is poor.  Her mother falls ill and dies and she rejects his proposal, saying that she needs to take care of her younger sister, plus the father doesn't approve of him. He is hurt/angry by her decision and joins the Navy.  He comes back after 7 years (I think she's 25 at this time) and of course is wealthy now.  He begins to court the younger sister, which breaks the girl's heart.  She decides to become a companion to an older woman who plans to travel around the world, and Africa was mentioned.  I remember a description of her wearing a purple turban.   The man tells her she can't do that, etc...   Of course, in the end he tells her he's always loved only her and they end up together HEA.

If anyone can help me out, I'd be so grateful.  I've been wanting to find/read this book again for years.

It sounds good, but that's not it.   Thanks for trying to help, though (and for giving me a possible book to use in another swap!).

I'm not familiar with either of those boards, and I love book sleuth-type boards helping other people find books they can't remember.  Can you provide links or web addresses?  Thanks.

Yup, someone was able to Name That Book, and I am so thrilled!!!  As soon as Janet PM'd me, I looked for book  and when I saw the cover, I knew it was it.  I was actually checking in from work, and I did really squeal with glee.  Good thing my office door was closed at the time!  :-)     There are 6 copies available here and I've requested one.  I hope the request gets accepted soon! I looked online at my local library JIC they have it, but they don't.

It's been going on 30 years since I read it (it's older than I thought, but I know I read it while I was still in high school---did I just out my age with that. btw??), but I am pretty sure it was G rated.  It's stuck in my mind all these years, so apparently I really liked it, or at least really liked it back then.  I hope I'm not disappointed when I read it again.  My request still has not been accepted by the member (GRRRRR!!!), so I hope she checks in soon.  There are 6 copies in the system, so hopefully if it passes to the next person, they will respond quickly OR if anyone one here has it, please PM me and I'll order it directly from you!
