Several years ago, I read a wonderful book about a young woman who lived in Europe in the Middle Ages. Possibly Britain.

She grew up in a humble family but married a good man, a knight, who own his own castle and lands. She had 9 children by him and lived a good life. For some reason, though, I am wondering if it turned out that the man she married was a bad man and the children she had were by her lover, disguised as her husband's children. I can't completely remember. All I really remember is that she was happy and had many children.

This book was super-thick, I'm thinking at least 900-1000 pages.

I would so love to find this book again, but I cannot for the life of me remember the title or author.

If you have any clue, any inkling or any idea as to what this book may be, please tell me!! I am dying to read it again.

Thanks in advance for your help.

ETA - I also remember that the cover (at the least the one that I read) looked very stained-glass window-y, with a picture of a woman on the front.

Amy - Sorry, I have no clue, but now you've got me wanting to read it too!  LOL!  I'll watch this thread and hope some of the many HF veterans around here can help you out.

Parts of it sound like Pamela Kaufman's Book of Eleanor, except Eleanor wasn't poor growing up.

SPOILER ALERT  -----------------------------------------

The fact that she made up a lover for Eleanor was one of the reasons that I hated the book so much - you don't mess with the historical record like that, especially when the actual love story between Eleanor and Henry II was so rich, varied, and complex.

It also sounds a lot like The World Is Not Enough, by Zoe Oldenbourg.  Set in the time of the Crusades, in the part of the world now known as France.  It is the first book of a series by this wonderful historical novelist of the Middle Ages.

Thanks for the title suggestions, but unfortunately neither of them are the book I am looking for. Can you hear the whine in my voice yet? LOL :)

I will be on the lookout for the book myself and post any updates when I find them. In the meantime, anyone else with suggestions - please post! Thank you all so much for your help.

Okay, after delving a bit deeper, I am wondering if the book that Bonnie mentioned is the book I am seeking. Unfortuntely, it looks like there are not copies posted in the system and nothing at my local library, so I cannot confirm either way.

Gosh, I have been thinking about this all day!

Amy, If you haven't already, try checking the title on Amazon - they usually give a synopsis that might help you figure out if that's the book you are looking for.
