On the Home page, and on pages dedicated to book descriptions, there is always a list of either recently posted books, or "members who ordered this book also ordered these books".    When I first joined, it was a great resource.  Not any more!  Now it appears that the same 6 - 10 titles show up time after time after time.  A few that come to mind are The Memory Keeper's Daughter, The Red Tent, Running With Scissors, etc.   See, I can almost name the list by memory!   There are 4.2 million books available in the system.  Why do the same titles show up all the time???  How can it get mixed up to feature some different ones?  Does it have to do with choosing genres?    Whatever the reason, it is certainly becoming annoying - I'd like to see some new ones!   D.

I rarely look at that feature, and those are not the books that appear on my pages.  It must depend on what books pages you are viewing?

I see different books shown for each book listing page for "members who ordered this book also ordered these books". Just checked.

That is what I'm trying to figure out, too.  How do you locate new books?  Even if your genres differ from mine, you do not see books suggested to you?  I had thought they were suggestions to lead us to new and more reading.  I have started to ignore these "obvious" suggestions, and instead go to the new members on the home page and look at their  bookshelf and wish list.  Then I can add something to my reminder list if it sounds good, or to the WL if it isn't available yet.   And sometimes out of curiosity I will do the same with a person writing on the forum.  It just seems like there would be more different selections in the "official" suggestions on those pages.

I've clicked on those suggestions before ("members who ordered this book also ordered these books" ) and found other books that I have wanted to order. Maybe only 1 out of 10 or 15 that I look at, though.

I noticed once that when I had been the first person to order a particular book on PBS (I was #1 on the WL) .... all of the suggested books were books  from MY TBR. And, they were not particularly related to the WL book ... they were just random things that I had received recently.

You probably haven't set any genres under Settings.  It changed what it showed me to books I'd be more interested in after I set my favorite genres. Although In truth those are like white noise to me and I don't really pay attention to them anymore.

My guess is that the list is statistically generated and since those books are very highly posted and requested they end up top on the list quite often.

I would look at how specific you have your favorite genre listed. Maybe you can add or broaden that so it looks at a bigger range of books.

The books that show up on my home page have to do with the genre that I have set as "my favorite genre".  The next line of books has to do with posted recently.  These books change on a daily basis for me, so I'm not sure why you are getting the same books unless your browser is serving up a cached vesion of the web page.  Try holding down the CTRL key and then clicking on the "refresh" button on your browser.  That will force a refresh of the web page in case you are getting a cached page.

I've had that happen to me too Sara. I'm looking down the "others ordered..." list going, "oh, I'll probably like this book because I liked that book, and that book, and ... wait a minute, those are my books!"

To OP - the recently posted list on the front page does not seem to be influenced by genre choices, and at this moment it's not showing any of the books you listed. On the individual book pages, it may be that the books you're most attracted to are the ones that are most like those other titles, so those really are the ones that have been ordered by people who liked the books you're looking at. Have you tried "Find a Book I'll LIke" to see if it'll come up with any other options for you? It's under My Account / My Lists / FABIL.

I have no idea how that page works, but Melanie may have it right. I find about half of the books I order on that page, both in my genres and the unsorted list. They just jump up there. What you also might do is go to search and ask for recently posted books, which includes everying. In a given hour of "prime time" are nearly a thousand. about 80& are chick lit or pulp fiction, so if that is your bag you will really be in business.

I never go to that page, so don't know what to tell you--I have my bookmark for PBS set to my own account page, so never see those 'recently posted' books or suggestions. The only suggestions I see are when I click on a specific book details it says "people who ordered this book also ordered...." which mostly just makes me laugh. I get most of my recommendations from the genre forums, other book groups online, friends who share my reading taste, etc.

I use FABIL quite frequently and sounds like a feature that you would enjoy using. I have found quite a few books on there that I wouldn't have found otherwise.

Lots of times the 'members who ordered this book also ordered' are all obviously me - I guess I've ordered some books nobody else has ever ordered. Not sure how I feel about that.

That's pretty interesting, Sara!   LOL   What I see usually are books that I have on the BIR list, so it isn't helpful - just repetitive...  Maybe the FABIL is the way to go - haven't tried that in ages.  Actually, I don't lack for interesting books to order and the TBR pile is getting rather big, too.  The genres I use and order vary so widely that maybe the system has gotten confused over me - just about anything that sounds interesting from adventure and biography to horror to historical fiction and contemporary fiction.  Guess I can't even pick a genre - lol!  Just kept seeing the same things over and over - thought it would sure be nice to change for a different look.   But you are right - if you click on one, it takes you to more and you could continue that way half the night (and I do!)

Thanks, everybody, for the good suggestions!    D.

Another resource for book ideas, are the discussion threads.  Find the ones for your favorite genres and browse the topic, many have great discussions.  If you don't see anything helpful, start your own discussion thread!  PBS members are always happy to share favorite author & book ideas with other members.  The Amazon threads are another great resource for stretching your reading pool!

I picked my 3 favorite genres and they show up on the first line of books on that page.  Then I picked the genre of books I wanted to see when they are posted. So the 2nd line is always from the fantasy genre.  I don't get random books.  I love that page.  I get to read the latest book reviews and see new members' profles as well as all the books.
