Last month when bookcloseouts.com had a promo going on, I ordered a few books from authors I had never heard of.  Fred Vargas being one of them, surprise to me, it's a woman!  Anyway, I got "Have Mercy on Us All" and "Wash This Blood Clean From My Hands".  They are # 3 and 4 in the series.  If you have read her, is it worth buying the 1st couple in the series from Amazon before I begin the series?  "The Chalk Circle Man" and "Seeking Whom He May Devour" are the ones I am asking about.  The author is French and these are newly translated books from what I can gather, it is why they are a little more difficult to find.

I also picked up 3 from Craig Russell and 2 from Eric Wilson.  If you have read either of them, what did you think of their writing?    Thanks, All!

I have read Fred Vargas.

The Chalk Circle Man is not published in the USA yet (I know it came out in Canada last week, maybe it will be in the USA soon?)

The first book Have Mercy on Us All  is the place to start.  You should read these in order.

I liked them and have recommended them to others.

someone recommended this author to me for the book challenge since the book was originally published in French.

anyway, they said that she writes really good books and that whoever translated the first one isn't as good as whoever translated the others

Thank you - I think I will hang on to the 2 Fred Vargas I have (in other words, not read them yet!) and try and get the others in the meantime.

That was me who said the first one was not translated as well as the others :)

It is just a minor opinion.  I think the translator was a little to literal in their job, but still worth reading.  I do want to say that the first book is still very good!  At least, it kept me looking for others in the series!

Definitely try to get the first book and let me know what you think!
