I just finished it and would love to chat about it. Especially the ending.

I read it a few weeks ago.  I don't think it lived up to the hype it had received and I wasn't too sure about the ending.  I found it all a little odd.

I read it over the summer and really liked it. I didn't know much about it when I picked it up, but the inside flap sounded interesting. When I finished it it was one of those endings that stayed with me awhile. I even went back and reread the last chapter because I wasn't sure I got it all the first time. It was one of the those books where I didn't know the ending before it happened and that was enough to make me like the book.

I'm with Emily - I read it and thought it was okay, but the ending was really weird and disappointing. The whole book did not live up to the hype.

I thought the last chapter was a major twist. It was mostly unexpected for me. Knowing the true story does make me think about the rest of the book differently.

I wasn't wowed by it. It's hard to want to like the protagonist when she admits to not telling the true from the very beginning. But then I warmed up to the story and totally forgot about that part.

So I guess her lies were self-preservation?

Yeah i do think they were self preservation to her.  I think the last chapter threw me for such a major loop that the whole book just fell apart for me.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I really enjoyed this book, especially the Salem setting and the psychological aspects.

My review:

I was a little disappointed in the book, also.  I actually was taken in by the twin thing; however, as I finished it, I remembered that the narrator had warned us that she lied.  I also found myself having to concentrate to keep the names Eva, Emma, and May apart, remembering who each one was (or, at least, who I thought  they were).  And please tell me why Rafferty would be interested in this crazy girl!

Vivian,

I don't think Rafferty sees her as crazy, even as the reader we don't really see the full scope until the end. I think he sees her as someone who has suffered a deep loss with the death of her aunt - not someone who's crazy. Also, some people have that gene that makes them want to fix people, so maybe that's he's excuse.

Melissa,

I have to agree.  I do think that Rafferty views her as someone that he can possibly "fix."  I think there's a lot of different ways that this book can be viewed and a lot of different ways that the reader can interpret the whole thing.  I think that's why the views on the book are so different.  I felt it was too far out there for me as a reader to believe, while others thought the twist is what made the book so good.  That's what I love about reading.  So many different people can have so many different ideas about just one book.

This book was a big disappointment for me.  I could not get into it at all.  I read about 150 pages.  Then finally gave up....I did read the ending.  A little strange like the entire book.

did anyone else get that she was a schizophrenic and sometimes paranoid when she thought she was reading minds/ ? I think she was hearing voices in her head. also she never had a twin, so her personality split into 2 people. she said lindley was abused but it was her. so she split and let it be another person. now i was some confused about emma and cal being her parents. may was the aunt and eva the grandmother? please respond i want to know if anyone else saw this in the bok. i was fasinated by the story. karen

Started it, but gave up after about four chapters.
