YA book, set in England. main character is a boy I think his name might have been Simon. He's in a private boarding school and he is miserable because he is being tormented by other students. He runs off and finds a hiding place on or near the school grounds. The hiding place is a cave or a tunnel I can't remember which. He finds something in the hiding place, old artifacts or cave drawings or something like that, and the things he finds draw him into an adventure. That's about all I can remember about the book. Hoping somebody recognizes it.

It sounds kind of like The Spiderwick Chronicles

No, this was something I read at least 20 years ago. I think it was from the 70s or early 80s.

I'm assuming this isn't what you're thinking of, but it sounds similar to The Silver Chair from The Chronicles of Narnia.

Found it through Loganberry Books - Through the Hidden Door by Rosemary Wells. Have it on order here, now to see if it is as good as I remember from 20 years ago...
