Appetite for America was a thoroughly enjoyable book, one of the best I've read in a long time. In light of the corruption and scandals that fill today's news, it's refreshing to learn about the wildly successful business Fred Harvey built on his commitment to time-honored ideals of family honor, superior value, and plain hard work. The in-depth Harvey family history, with its wonderful photographs, is linked to the history of a developing America, a country struggling with the transition from Civil War to 20th century. The pages are filled with glimpses of notable figures--politicians, executives, celebrities, even criminals--connected in some way with the Harveys. Carefully researched, carefully written, it makes compelling reading. Recommended.
