The soldiers saw the jeep rise brokenly on a wave of flame. The next moment it came down with a crash. It lurched to one side, tires burst, oil spurting from its shattered engine, flames licking its sides.
The horrified spell was broken. The soldiers doubletimed forward. Hurriedly they peeled the the smouldering uniforms from the dead GIs, telling themselves that they had just unwittingly killed four of their own guys.
